  • Don’t be deceived

    Open Access•Jakub Rudnicki, Joanna Odrowąż-Sypniewska•ARTICLE•Synthese•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 34

The traditional conception of lying, according to which to lie is to make an assertion with an intention to deceive the hearer, has recently been put under pressure by the phenomenon of bald-faced lies i.e. utterances that prima facie look like lies but because of their blatancy allegedly lack the accompanying intention to deceive. In this paper we propose an intuitive way of reconciling the phenomenon of bald-faced lies with the traditional conc…

  • Faultless and Genuine Disagreement over Vague Predicates

    Open Access•Joanna Odrowąż-Sypniewska•ARTICLE•Theoria•2021

In this article I propose a view which explains how it is possible that the disagreement concerning clear cases of a given vague predicate is genuine, whereas that concerning borderline cases is faultless. I take the possibility of faultless disagreement concerning borderline cases to be an important characteristic of vague predicates and in my view any adequate theory of vagueness should account for it. My proposal might be called “contextual su…

  • Functional logical semiotics of natural language

    Open Access•Joanna Odrowąż-Sypniewska•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2021•References: 12

In the first part of my paper I briefly present Jerzy Pelc’s functional approach to logical semiotics of natural language. This approach focuses on the use of natural language expressions and on its dependence on context and conversational situation. One of the important goals of this analysis is to appreciate the role of sentences in natural language and stress that it is by means of sentences that language fulfills its main roles. However, for …

  • Does the Twin-Earth argument rest on a fallacy of equivocation

    Open Access•Joanna Odrowąż-Sypniewska•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2012

In this paper I show that the first part of Putnam's Twin Earth argument rests on equivocation. If we distinguish different senses of the word “means” we will see that Putnam presupposes in this part of his argument that the meaning of “water” on Earth is different from the meaning of “water” on Twin Earth. Once the equivocation is removed, it becomes apparent that the argument cannot be used in the proof that natural kind terms are nondescriptiv…
