Prolactin Levels in Mild Depression
To determine if serum prolactin levels were correlated with the level of depression in an ambulatory medical clinic population, prolactin was measured by immunoassay in all new medical patients completing the Langer Scale and the Popoff Index of Depression. Thirty-four of 71 patients (48%) were found to be depressed with a positive Popoff Scale. There was no difference in the prolactin levels in the depressed and nondepressed patients, who were m…

Psychologic and Neural Regulation of Growth Hormone Secretion
A wide variety of stressful stimuli, both physical and psychologic, cause GH discharge in both man and monkey in a manner reminiscent of the changes in ACTH secretion under similar circumstances. The hypothalamus appears to mediate acute changes in GH release as evidenced by the finding that basal hypothalamic or infundibular lesions and pituitary stalk section blocked the acute GH response to hypoglycemia in rat, monkey and man. Changes in GH re…
Neuroendocrinology
A THREAD of neuroendocrine theory runs through much of the history of medical science: emotional states were once identified with the Galenic humors, choler, bile and phlegm; Vesalius viewed the third ventricle, infundibulum ("funnel") of the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland as the pathway by which animal spirits drained to form nasal mucus ("pituita"); and the Cartesian interpretation of the mind-body problem centered upon a pineal soul. The…
The Effect of Psychic-sexual Stimulation on Urinary and Serum Acid Phosphatase and Plasma Nonesterified Fatty Acids
In an attempt to develop a quantitative chemical measure of the intensity of sexual arousal a study was made of urinary acid phosphatase secretion rate and plasma acid phosphatase levels in young men, as influenced by the viewing of a sexually arousing moving picture. In a group of 17 subjects, 12 showed an increase in urinary acid phosphatase secretion rate, but, this effect was not correlated with subjective response (as evaluated by questionna…
