  • Using Modern Contraception While Wanting a Child

    Open Access•Moussa Lonkila Zan, Claudine Sauvain‐Dugerdil et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2024•References: 8

    (1) Background: Sustainable development goal 5.6 calls for “universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights” to fulfil sexual and reproductive practices. The capability approach helps refine the analysis of contraceptive use by going beyond the dichotomous view of contraceptive use as use/non-use to focus on women’s freedom to choose what they have good reason to value. Using the case of Burkina Faso, we probe more deep…

  • Women's personal networks and recourse to prenatal care in Bamako

Open Access•Siaka Cisse, Clémentine Rossier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Demographic Economics•2022

This study aims to determine the role played by the personal networks of mothers aged 25–40 in Bamako (Mali) in their recourse to prenatal care. Although education and household's economic situation remain important, our research shows that personal network matters in two ways. Prenatal follow-up is more adequate in small, dense, less centralized networks, a structure known to generating a higher level of bonding social capital and mutual support…

  • La migration temporaire des jeunes au Sénégal

Valerie Delaunay, Emmanuelle Engeli et al.•ARTICLE•Afrique contemporaine•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 29

  • Youth Mobility in an Isolated Sahelian Population of Mali

    Open Access•Claudine Sauvain-Dugerdil, Claudine Sauvain‐Dugerdil•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 11

This article uses fieldwork collected in four villages of the Sarnyéré Dogon in Mali between 2002 and 2010 to explore the impact of unprecedented individual youth mobility. This small Sahelian population has been challenged by declining natural resources and an opening up to the outside world. Temporary migration of families before each rainy season or harvest has always been part of this population's adaptation to an arid environment, but youth …

  • The Start of the Sexual Transition in Mali

    Open Access•Claudine Sauvain‐Dugerdil, Bassoutoura Gakou et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 13

Analysis of data from a questionnaire survey of 2,000 young Malians undertaken by the authors in 2002 demonstrates that, even in underprivileged urban and rural populations, changes in sexual behavior are emerging. Among women, first sex and motherhood are taking place slightly later, and a minority is now dissociating sexuality and procreation. Our data confirm the considerable impact of female education on this transition. Girls’ sexual activit…

  • The reporductive cycle and population dynamics

    Open Access•Claudine Sauvain‐Dugerdil, C Sauvain-Dugerdil•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 6

By discussing the concept of population reproduction from the points of view of different disciplines, we propose here a reflection on the foundation of population studies, i.e. the definition of the population studied and the mechanisms of its dynamics. Our considerations are based on the example of the Bagnes valley in the 19th century, putting it into perspective with data we have gathered in two other traditional populations. In the first par…

  • Continuity, Collapse or Metamorphosis? Demographic anthropology and the study of change within human populations.Foreword

    Open Access•Claudine Sauvain‐Dugerdil, C Sauvain-Dugerdil et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1996•Cited by: 2•References: 9

this first paper introduces the topic of the volume, outcomes of a symposium organised at the 13th ICAES held in Mexico in August 1993. It briefly reminds of the convergence between anthropology and demography up to date and stresses on the need of real transdisciplinary work in this challenging domain. The aim of the symposium was to make a contribution on the central theme chosen by the congress — the cultural and biological dimensions of globa…

  • Introduction

    Open Access•Claudine Sauvain‐Dugerdil, C Sauvain-Dugerdil•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1996

This short text presents the third part of the volume. The five contributions illustrate the different levels at which reproduction can be considered-the individual, the family, the community, the population-but also their necessary interactions. The individual behaviour cannot but be understood in the context of his(her) family and community; the population dynamics is but the result of the family life cycle and the processes which took place wi…

  • La re-source de l’homme

    Open Access•Claudine Sauvain-Dugerdil, Claudine Sauvain‐Dugerdil•CHAPTER•L’homme inachevé•1987

    Open Access•Claudine Sauvain-Dugerdil, Claudine Sauvain‐Dugerdil•CHAPTER•L’homme inachevé•1987

    Open Access•Claudine Sauvain-Dugerdil, Claudine Sauvain‐Dugerdil•CHAPTER•L’homme inachevé•1987
