Women’s self-help group participation and discussion of reproductive coercion
Reproductive coercion (RC) and intimate partner violence (IPV) are prevalent in Kenya and undermine women’s reproductive agency; community-based women’s groups may offer an opportunity to address these issues. We quantitatively examined women’s participation in women-only self-help groups, described discussions of RC within these groups, and assessed differences based on prior experiences of RC and IPV among a clinic-based sample of Kenyan women …
Building a theory of change to guide fatherhood programming to prevent family violence
Fatherhood programs have increasingly been recognized as a promising approach to prevent violence against women and children (VAWC), yet there remains limited synthesis across programs to clarify the core components that drive change. Most existing studies focus on individual program evaluations. Identifying shared principles or pathways can inform broader implementation and scale. Indicators for Reproductive Violence
The term reproductive violence (RV) unifies forms of gender‐based violence that compromise reproductive autonomy. This study developed a multilevel quantitative measurement framework for RV comprised of indicators at the interpersonal, community, institutional, and law and policy levels. We conducted a systematized literature review, extracting and scoring existing indicators based on prior testing in a low‐ and middle‐income country setting, psy…
Addressing social norms for adolescent timing and spacing of pregnancy in low and middle-income countries
Background: Social norms shape adolescent sexual and reproductive health behaviours contributing to contraceptive and pregnancy outcomes. No global research agendas exist to guide research on adolescent social norms shifting in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We developed a social norms research agenda to improve adolescent healthy timing and spacing of pregnancy in LMICs. Methods: We adapted and applied the Child Health and Nutrition R…
‘Here, the girl has to obey the family's decision’
Reproductive coercion (RC) undermines women's decision-making in reproductive health and negatively impacts women's health and well-being. This qualitative study explored RC in Bangladesh using in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs) with violence support centre clients, menstrual regulation (MR) and postabortion care (PAC) clients, and MR/PAC providers and pre- and post-procedure counsellors. All IDIs and FGDs were audio re…
Using Systematic Anomalous Case Analysis to Examine Sexual and Reproductive Health Outcomes in the Philippines
The Philippines is characterized by sustained economic growth and political stability, yet sexual and reproductive health indicators have stalled or even worsened in recent decades. We employed an innovative, mixed‐methods approach—Systematic Anomalous Case Analysis—to gain insights into these worsening trends by examining sexual and reproductive decision‐making among a cohort of young adults in Metro Cebu, Philippines. We first analyzed longitud…
