  • Exploring the Maximally Sensitive Priors

    Open Access•Nikodem Lewandowski, Rafal Urbaniak•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2026

We explore the Maximum Sensitivity method (MaxSen) of selecting priors for Bayesian inference in the face of severe lack of evidence (Konek, 2013). MaxSen minimizes the need to rely on the epistemic luck of true parameter values falling closely to their prior estimate. We explore the impact of the choice of the scoring method on the recommendations made by MaxSen. It turns out that if we use Kullback-Leibler Divergence (KLD) as a distance measure,…

  • A Bayesian Approach to Uncertainty in Word Embedding Bias Estimation

    Open Access•Alicja Dobrzeniecka, Rafal Urbaniak•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2024•References: 2

Multiple measures, such as WEAT or MAC, attempt to quantify the magnitude of bias present in word embeddings in terms of a single-number metric. However, such metrics and the related statistical significance calculations rely on treating pre-averaged data as individual data points and utilizing bootstrapping techniques with low sample sizes. We show that similar results can be easily obtained using such methods even if the data are generated by a…

  • Informal provability and dialetheism

    Open Access•Pawel Pawlowski, Rafal Urbaniak•ARTICLE•Theoria•2023

According to the dialetheist argument from the inconsistency of informal mathematics, the informal version of the Gödelian argument leads us to a true contradiction. On one hand, the dialetheist argues, we can prove that there is a mathematical claim that is neither provable nor refutable in informal mathematics. On the other, the proof of its unprovability is given in informal mathematics and proves that very sentence. We argue that the argument…

  • Personal attacks decrease user activity in social networking platforms

Open Access•Rafal Urbaniak, Michał Ptaszyński et al.•ARTICLE•Computers in Human Behavior•2022

  • Artificial intelligence against hate

    Open Access•M Bilewicz, Patrycja Tempska et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 24

This article presents a quasi‐experimental intervention study designed to reduce the level of verbal aggression on a social networking service (Reddit). The interventions were based on three psychological mechanisms: induction of a descriptive norm, induction of a prescriptive norm, and empathy induction. Each intervention was generated using a communicating bot. Participants exposed to these interventions were compared with a control group that …

  • Probabilistic models of legal corroboration

Open Access•Rafal Urbaniak, Pavel Janda•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2019

The aim is to develop a sensible probabilistic model of legal corroboration in response to an attack on the probabilistic approach to legal reasoning due to Cohen. One of Cohen’s arguments is that there is no probabilistic measure of evidential support which satisfactorily captures the situation in which independent witnesses testify to the truth of the same proposition (or independent pieces of evidence converge on a certain claim)—the phenomeno…

  • Challenging Lewis’s challenge to the best system account of lawhood

  • Stanisław Leśniewski

    Open Access•Rafal Urbaniak•ARTICLE•European Review•2015•References: 1

Near the end of the nineteenth century, a part of mathematical research was focused on unification: the goal was to find ‘one sort of thing’ that mathematics is (or could be taken to be) about. Quite quickly sets became the main candidate for this position. While the enterprise hit a rough patch with Frege’s failure and set-theoretic paradoxes, by the 1920s mathematicians (roughly speaking) settled on a promising axiomatization of set theory and …

  • Plural quantifiers

    Open Access•Rafal Urbaniak•ARTICLE•Synthese•2014•References: 22

One of the standard views on plural quantification is that its use commits one to the existence of abstract objects–sets. On this view claims like ‘some logicians admire only each other’ involve ineliminable quantification over subsets of a salient domain. The main motivation for this view is that plural quantification has to be given some sort of semantics, and among the two main candidates—substitutional and set-theoretic—only the latter can pr…

  • Platonic” thought experiments

    Open Access•Rafal Urbaniak•ARTICLE•Synthese•2012•References: 9

Brown (The laboratory of the mind. Thought experiments in the natural science, 1991a, 1991b; Contemporary debates in philosophy of science, 2004; Thought experiments, 2008) argues that thought experiments (TE) in science cannot be arguments and cannot even be represented by arguments. He rest his case on examples of TEs which proceed through a contradiction to reach a positive resolution (Brown calls such TEs “platonic”). This, supposedly, makes …
