In this article I give a broad overview of the intellectu…

  • Narrating the past: Reflections on recent Black Afrikaans writing

    Open Access•Steward Van Wyk•ARTICLE•Tydskrif vir letterkunde•2018

A return to the past has been a dominant feature of recent Afrikaans writing. This is evident in the many novels re-visiting the Anglo-Boer War or recounting incidents from the apartheid past. The approaches include the debunking of myths and a nostalgic longing for the good old days. Whether this is true of the small body of Black Afrikaans writing, given its ambivalent relationship to the canon, needs to be investigated. A number of texts that …

    Open Access•Steward Van Wyk•ARTICLE•Tydskrif vir letterkunde•2017

This article pursues an intertextual reading of Adam Small’s collection of poetry Sê sjibbolet (“Say shibboleth”). The collection is read alongside texts that refer to “shibboleth” in their titles i.e. works by Paul Celan, Jacques Derrida and Doris Salcedo. The analysis draws on the readings that these texts provide of the Biblical passage in Judges 12 and the possibilities for further analysis that they open up of Small’s title poem and collecti…

    Open Access•Steward Van Wyk•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•2004

This article examines the drama strategies of Adam Small and specifically focusses on the phenomenon of the mulat. This element provides a suitable perspective because on the one hand it is something that Small touches on in his dramas and other writing and on the other hand there exists an extensive literature which explores the dramatic, philosophical and literary theoretical meaning of the term. The work of Langston Hughes and Derek Walcott, a…

  • Die dialektiek van genre: Kanttekeninge by Bakhtin en Jameson

    Open Access•Steward Van Wyk•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•1994

After a discussion of the problems with a definition of genre and the short‐comings in the practice of traditional genre‐criticism, the conclusion is reached that the concept has some practical use in the analysis and interpretation of texts and also as a means of accounting for the socio‐political grounds of a text. Along with Bakhtin and Jameson it is argued that genre as a formal and social construct gives the opportunity to study the dialecti…
