Introduction to the Special Collection
This Editorial Introduction details how rapid increases in book bans and censorship across the United States are impacting literacy practices in the form of censored literacies. Whether redacted or removed from schools or other spaces of literacy learning, censored literacies are shaped by context, and stakeholders are responding through literacy practices of freedom that are rooted in collective action. Whether chronicling censored literacies or…
In Search of Our Tiny Gardens
This piece uses Alice Walker's In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens as a conceptual framework to highlight the unique ways Girls and Femmes of Color (GFOC) create beauty and life amidst a backdrop of devastating oppression. In doing so, we emphasize the brilliance and beauty of GFOC and their multiliterate practices while also challenging the notion of “art for art's sake.” This work will narrate our material and metaphorical relationship to their m…
All About Black Girl Love in Education
Pláticando about Love at the Kitchen Table
In this paper two Women of Color academics employ and blend Chicana Feminist Pláticas and Kitchen Table Talk methodologies to engage in a culturally rooted dialogue about the power of love in education. They explore their journeys towards studying love, love in praxis, and ultimately, argue that love is a practice for cultivating and sustaining our collective well-being

Towards a Jazz Pedagogy
Throughout this article we argue that collectivity and soul inform the work of the expert teachers who we refer to as Jazz Pedagogues. Jazz’s complicated history, like teaching, calls for a consideration of the painful, the messy, the beautiful, and the healing. We, a team of university researchers and classroom teachers, examine the ways jazz can serve as one way to understand how Black-centric, anti-racist English teachers draw on their pedagog…
In Dialogue
With funding from the American Educational Research Association (AERA), Marva Cappello, Jennifer D. Turner, and Angela M. Wiseman convened a group of critical multimodal scholars in April 2022 to initiate a national agenda that prioritizes the use of visual and multimodal methodologies to promote educational equity and racial justice for youth of color. Our conference gathering included Reka Barton, Darielle Blevins, Justin Coles, Autumn A. Griff…

Race(ing) towards futurity
E-racing false narratives
In 2019 the University of Missouri Athletics (Mizzou Athletics) tweeted an image of student athletes as part of their “I am” campaign. While the two white student athletes are defined with captions stating the certainty of their future careers, the Black students are defined by their racial identity and current values. The Mizzou tweet demonstrates how collegiate sports programs at PWIs reflect white patriarchal systems that seek to control the f…
Black Parade
This piece builds on scholarship in African American parading and Black Girls’ Literacies by presenting parading as a metaphor to analyze a website created by nine Black adolescent girls. I draw on multimodal analysis frameworks to understand the symbolic nature of the site and its components, as well as how the girls use it as a platform to speak to issues of racism, sexism, self-definition, joy, and celebration. The girls write against liminal …
