Forecasting Provincial Business Indicator Variables and Forecast Evaluation
This paper evaluates a number of univariate and multivariate time-series forecasting models of selected indicator variables for three Canadian provinces: Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba. The out of sample forecasts from these models are compared not only with themselves but with common indicators from the quarterly provincial forecast model of the Conference Board of Canada. The concepts of directional accuracy, the conditional efficiency,…
Market Models and Heteroscedasticity of Residual Security Returns
Bickel's tests provide attractive robust alternatives to traditional tests of heteroscedasticity. NYSE securities have homoscedastic residuals once nonnormality of security returns is allowed. Some portfolio designs may generate some heteroscedastic residuals, but this heteroscedasticity is reduced by the Kraus-Litzenberger quadratic market model. This result suggests a misspecification in the traditional market model

Effect of Desired Sex Composition in Families on the Birth Rate
This paper attempts to assess, by assuming the sex of a live birth to be a binomial event, the contribution of desires for specific sex compositions to the level of birth rate. Data from India are utilized to quantify the contribution. It is found that the birth rate in India could be greatly reduced by an effective campaign of limiting family size to three, even if the campaign were accepted by only those couples who had achieved their desired f…
Developing indices of nutritional level from anthropometric measurements on women and young children
The development of an index of nutritional level using data which incorporate both past and current nutritional experience is discussed
