  • Acquisition of Finnish derivational morphology

Open Access•Seppo Vainio, Anneli Pajunen et al.•ARTICLE•First Language•2019

The current study examined how morpho-semantic processing of derivational morphology develops from later childhood through adolescence to adulthood in Finnish. Finnish is a synthetic language rich both in derivation and inflection. It has been suggested that children gradually acquire the ability to process morphologically complex word structures. However, this development could be delayed because of the complex derivational morphology in Finnish…

  • Processing modifier–head agreement in L1 and L2 Finnish

    Open Access•Seppo Vainio, Anneli Pajunen et al.•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This study investigated the effect of first language (L1) on the reading of modifier–head case agreement in second language (L2) Finnish by native Russian and Chinese speakers. Russian is similar to Finnish in that both languages use case endings to mark grammatical roles, whereas such markings are absent in Chinese. The critical nouns were embedded in sentences, where the head noun was either preceded by an agreeing modifier or the modifier was …

  • Processing modifier-head agreement in long Finnish words

Open Access•Seppo Vainio, Raymond Bertram et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Linguistica Hungarica•2011

The present study investigates whether processing of an inflected Finnish noun is facilitated when preceded by a modifier in the same case ending. In Finnish, modifiers agree with their head nouns both in case and in number and the agreement is expressed by means of suffixes (e.g., vanha/ssa talo/ssa ‘old/in house/in’ → ‘in the old house’). Vainio et al. (2003; 2008) showed processing benefits for this kind of modifier-head agreement, when the he…

  • Adjectives in spoken language discourse

    Anneli Pajunen•ARTICLE•WORD•1998•References: 13

The status of adjectives as a universal lexical category has recently been questioned. This argument may take different forms. In its simplest form, it just points out the fact that there are languages without adjectives. In a subtler, more “foundational” form it submits that adjectives have no unique pragmatic function, but rather adapt themselves either to the pragmatic function of nouns (= reference/referent-introduction) or to the pragmatic f…
