Modelling future coastal water pollution
Urbanisation is happening worldwide. In 2100, over 70% of the population is projected to live in highly urbanised areas. As a result, urban wastewater discharge may increase. This may add multiple pollutants to rivers and coastal waters. However, current knowledge on how urbanisation-related socio-economic developments affect coastal water pollution is limited. In this study, we analysed individual and combined impacts of wastewater treatment imp…
Uplifting local ecological knowledge as part of adaptation pathways to wildfire risk reduction
Living with wildfires in an era of climate change requires adaptation and weaving together many forms of knowledge. Empirical evidence of knowledge co-production in wildfire management is lacking in Mediterranean European areas. We explored how local ecological knowledge can be leveraged to reduce wildfire risk through an adaptation pathways process in the Montseny massif and wider Tordera River watershed of Catalonia, Spain: an area stewarded th…
The future of the Black Sea
The population in the Black Sea region is expected to decline in the future. However, a better understanding of how river pollution is affected by declining trends in population and increasing trends in economic developments and urbanization is needed. This study aims to quantify future trends in point-source emissions of nutrients, microplastics, Cryptosporidium , and triclosan to 107 rivers draining into the Black Sea. We apply a multi-pollutan…
Water, society and pollution in an urbanizing world
Water pollution from food production
Food production is a source of various pollutants in aquatic systems. For example, nutrients are lost from fertilized fields, and pathogens from livestock production. Water pollution may impact society and nature. Large-scale water pollution assessments, however, often focus on single pollutants and not on multiple pollutants simultaneously. This study draws lessons from air pollution control for large-scale water quality assessments, where multi…
Bridging global, basin and local-scale water quality modeling towards enhancing water quality management worldwide
Global WQ models need sufficient consideration of mechanistic understanding. • Multiscale WQ modeling facilitates more consistent water management across scales. • Process-based parsimonious models are proposed for global WQ model development. • Water management requires active collaboration among WQ modelers and policy-makers. Global water quality (WQ) modeling is an emerging field. In this article, we identify the missing linkages between globa…
Global multi-pollutant modelling of water quality
Assessing global water quality issues requires a multi-pollutant modelling approach. We discuss scientific challenges and future directions for such modeling. Multi-pollutant river models need to integrate information on sources of pollutants such as plastic debris, nutrients, chemicals, pathogens, their effects and possible solutions. In this paper, we first explain what we consider multi-pollutant modelling. Second, we discuss scientific challe…
Alarming nutrient pollution of Chinese rivers as a result of agricultural transitions
Transitions in Chinese agriculture resulted in industrial animal production systems, disconnected from crop production. We analyzed side-effects of these transitions on total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) and phosphorus (TDP) inputs to rivers. In 2000, when transitions were ongoing, 30%-70% of the manure was directly discharged to rivers (range for sub-basins). Before the transition (1970) this was only 5%. Meanwhile, animal numbers more than doubled.…
Global modelling of surface water quality
Modelling the impact of sanitation, population growth and urbanization on human emissions of Cryptosporidium to surface waters—a case study for Bangladesh and India
Cryptosporidium is a protozoan parasite that can cause diarrhoea. Human faeces are an important source of Cryptosporidium in surface waters. We present a model to study the impact of sanitation, urbanization and population growth on human emissions of Cryptosporidium to surface waters. We build on a global model by Hofstra et al (2013 Sci. Total Environ. 442 10-9) and zoom into Bangladesh and India as illustrative case studies. The model is most …

Fast increases in urban sewage inputs to rivers of Indonesia
We present estimates for nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) sewage inputs to 19 Indonesian rivers for 1970–2050. Future trends are based on the four scenarios of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. Our results indicate a rapid increase in N and P pollution from sewage over time. In 1970, N and P inputs to rivers were low because not many households were connected to sewage systems discharging to rivers. Sewage connection is increasing over time. As…
