  • A systematic literature review of empirical validation of disaster resilience indicators

Open Access•Yuto Shiozaki, Shingo Nagamatsu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2024

Despite the increasing importance of disaster resilience assessments in regions, cities, and communities, most indicators have not been validated using empirical outcomes. The number of such validation studies is still limited but has been increasing in the past decade. This systematic review attempts to elucidate the findings of existing validation studies and discuss the issues to be addressed in future research. Prior to the review, multiple f…

  • Revising “Nutritional Reference Values for Feeding at Evacuation Shelters” According to Nutrition Assistance by Public Health Dietitians Based on Past Major Natural Disasters in Japan

Open Access•Noriko Sudo, Ikuko Shimada et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

It is important to provide nutritionally adequate food in shelters to maintain the health of evacuees. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has released the "Nutritional Reference Values for Evacuation Shelters" (Reference Values) after every major natural disaster. There is clear evidence, however, that the Reference Values have only been used infrequently. This study aims to revise these …

  • Natural hazard information and migration across cities

Open Access•Michio Naoi, Keiichi Sato et al.•ARTICLE•Population and Environment•2020•References: 27

This paper examines the effects of the 2012 revisions to the damage predictions of an anticipated Nankai Trough megathrust earthquake on subsequent inter-municipality migration in Japan’s coastal areas. We find that an increase in predicted tsunami height—rather than anticipated seismic movements—after the 2012 revision is associated with a subsequent reduction in net migration. While the reducing effect of tsunami predictions on in-migration per…

  • Reconstructing Kobe

    Keiichi Sato•REVIEW•Social Science Japan Journal•2011

The Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion was established in the wake of the devastating 1995 Hanshin Awaji earthquake with a mission to compile and statistically analyze vast amounts of seismic data in order to make long-range assessments of the likelihood of major earthquakes in the future. The agency has reported that within the next 30 years, the Nankai region has a 60% probability of a magnitude (M) 8.4 earthquake, the Tōnankai regi…

  • Microsimulation of the Temporary Housing Situation Following an Urban Disaster

    Open Access•Keiichi Sato•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•2010

At present, the expected occurrence of a massive earthquake in the Tokyo metropolitan area is a matter of concern for the Japanese Cabinet Office. In the event of a major urban disaster, it is unclear whether the present policy of housing assistance will work effectively. Microsimulation is a useful research approach to make preliminary proposals for concrete policy issues. To carry out a reliable microsimulation, a household’s behavior model was…
