  • From state of the practice to state of the art

Open Access•Maxwell Cabello, Michael Hyland et al.•ARTICLE•Transportation•2025

Metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) in the United States develop long-range Regional transportation plans (RTPs), which are required in order for municipalities to receive federal funds for transportation projects. Title VI of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 requires MPOs to submit an equity analysis to demonstrate that their RTPs do not discriminate against protected groups. This paper (i) identifies and evaluates the current range o…

  • Exploring the role of ride-hailing in trip chains

    Open Access•Tanjeeb Ahmed, Michael Hyland•ARTICLE•Transportation•2023

Ride-hailing can potentially provide a variety of benefits to individuals who need to chain several activities together within a single trip chain, relative to other travel modes. Using household travel diary/survey data, the goal of this study is to assess the role ride-hailing currently plays within trip chains. Specifically, the study aims to determine, within trip chains, who uses ride-hailing services, for what trip/activity purposes, and to…

  • Finding Silver Linings in the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Open Access•Anne-Marie Bacon, Jaysan J Charlesford et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2023

The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in widespread anxiety, fear and depression, yet focussing only on these negative issues may obscure the opportunity to promote positivity and resilience. Traumatic events can often result in positive life changes (adversarial growth) though there is little evidence in the context of pandemics, and no previous studies in Covid-19 with the general public. The present research investigated whether adversarial growt…

  • Government Health Warnings and the “Boomerang” Effect

    Open Access•Michael E Hyland, Michael Hyland et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1979•Cited by: 7•References: 1

The experiment shows that the presence of a government health warning on cigarette advertisements can “boomerang,” leading to an increased desire to smoke. 24 housewives saw a series of 25 cigarette advertisements; for 12 subjects the health warning was present and for 12 it was absent. Half the subjects in each group were smokers and half non-smokers. The presence of the warning increased the desire to smoke but the increase seems to be greater …

  • The anticipated belief differences theory of prejudice

    Open Access•Michael E Hyland, Michael Hyland•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1974•Cited by: 1•References: 39

The main supporting evidence for Rokeach's theory of prejudice (the Anticipated Belief Differences Theory of Prejudice) comes from the strong belief effects obtained in a simple Race/Belief manipulation. Analysis shows that the theory is unfalsifiable with this paradigm and is therefore neither tested nor confirmed by the many studies purporting to do so. The Belief‐undefined/Belief‐partially‐defined manipulation of Stein, Hardyck and Smith (1965…
