Depression and anxiety symptoms in internally migrated women and men after the German unification
Subgroup analyses revealed group differences to depend on sex, but show negligible effect sizes, with internal migration only explaining less than 0.2 % of the variance for depression and anxiety symptoms. Internal migration alone is thus no substantial factor in explaining mental health differences. Future studies should use longitudinal data to determine temporal associations between internal migration and mental health
Physical, mental and behavioral health indicators in relation to academic performance in European boys and girls
Our study underscores the need to consider both the importance of accounting for heterogeneity in sex and the differences between math and language academic subjects when investigating determinants of academic performance, setting the stage for further research on this topic to explore potential competing, synergistic, or time-dependent effects among these different health dimensions

Mental health of individuals with pre-existing mental illnesses at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a range of studies on mental health, with mixed results. While numerous studies reported worsened conditions in individuals with pre-existing mental disorders, others showed resilience and stability in mental health. However, longitudinal data focusing on the German population are sparse, especially regarding effects of age and pre-existing mental disorders during the early stages of the pandemic. Object…
Nutrition policies in Germany
Objective: To systematically assess Germany’s nutrition policies, to benchmark them against international best practices and to identify priority policy actions to improve population-level nutrition in Germany. Design: We applied the Food Environment Policy Index (Food-EPI), a methodological framework developed by the International Network for Food and Obesity/non-communicable Diseases Research, Monitoring and Action Support (INFORMAS) network. Q…

Associations Between Psychosocial Well-Being, Stressful Life Events and Emotion-Driven Impulsiveness in European Adolescents
Knowing the extent to which mental well-being and stressful life events during adolescence contribute to personality characteristics related to risk-taking behaviors, such as emotion-driven impulsiveness, is highly relevant for the development of health promotion measures. This study examined whether psychosocial well-being and different stressful life events are associated with emotion-driven impulsiveness. In total, 3,031 adolescents (52% girls…
Effects of Installing Height-Adjustable Standing Desks on Daily and Domain-Specific Duration of Standing, Sitting, and Stepping in 3rd Grade Primary School Children
Background Aim of this intervention study was to evaluate whether availability of standing desks in classrooms may reduce sitting time and enhance standing and stepping time during lessons and breaks. We evaluated if differences in standing desk use were explained by physical fitness (PF) levels of children and if standing desk use during school hours affected leisure time activity after school. Methods To assess sitting, standing and stepping du…
Relationship between perception of emotional home atmosphere and fruit and vegetable consumption in European adolescents
Objective: Consumption of fruits and vegetables (F&V) among adolescents falls below recommendations in many Western countries. The impact of social and emotional aspects of family life on adolescent dietary behaviour may contribute to this, yet remains under-investigated. The present study examines the association between adolescents’ perceptions of emotional home atmosphere (EHA) and their F&V consumption frequency. Design: An FFQ was used to as…
The associations of specific school- and individual-level characteristics with obesity among primary school children in Beijing, China
Objective: We aimed to investigate the associations between school-level characteristics and obesity among Chinese primary school children with consideration of individual-level characteristics. Design: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2015/2016. School-level characteristics were assessed using an interviewer-administered school questionnaire, and a ‘school-based obesity prevention index’ was further developed. Individual-level charact…
School- and Leisure Time Factors Are Associated With Sitting Time of German and Irish Children and Adolescents During School
Objective: The study aims to investigate to what extent school- and leisure time-related factors are associated with sedentary behavior during school in German and Irish children and adolescents. Methods: The study based on a sample of 198 children and adolescents surveyed in 2015. Sedentary and activity behavior were measured using the activPAL physical activity monitor. Information on socio-economic status, school- and leisure-time related fact…
Advancing the evidence base for public policies impacting on dietary behaviour, physical activity and sedentary behaviour in Europe
28 research institutes have joined in the Policy Evaluation Network (PEN). • PEN studies EU policies on diet, physical activity and sedentary behaviours. • PEN advances knowledge on impact and effective implementation of these policies. • We here describe the rationale and specific goals of PEN, and highlight innovations. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of global mortality. As the social and economic costs of NCDs have esca…
Exploring Food Access and Sociodemographic Correlates of Food Consumption and Food Insecurity in Zanzibari Households
Rapid growth of the Zanzibari population and urbanization are expected to impact food insecurity and malnutrition in Zanzibar. This study explored the relationship between food access (FA) and sociodemographic correlates with food consumption score and food insecurity experience scale. Based on cross-sectional data of 196 randomly selected households, we first investigated the association between sociodemographic correlates and Food Consumption S…
Emotion-driven impulsiveness but not decision-making ability and cognitive inflexibility predicts weight status in adults
Food and beverage intakes according to physical activity levels in European children
Objective Physical activity (PA) levels and dietary habits are considered some of the most important factors associated with obesity. The present study aimed to examine the association between PA level and food and beverage consumption in European children (2–10 years old). Design/Setting/Subjects A sample of 7229 children (49·0 % girls) from eight European countries participating in the IDEFICS (Identification and prevention of Dietary and lifes…

Domain-Specific Self-Reported and Objectively Measured Physical Activity in Children
Little is known about the extent that different domains contribute to total sedentary (SED), light (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). We aimed to identify domain-specific physical activity (PA) patterns in school-aged children who were assessed by questionnaire and accelerometry. For the study, 298 German school children and adolescents aged 6-17 years wore an accelerometer for one week and completed a PA recall-questionnair…
Prospective associations between dietary patterns and body composition changes in European children
Objective To describe dietary patterns by applying cluster analysis and to describe the cluster memberships of European children over time and their association with body composition changes. Design The analyses included k -means clustering based on the similarities between the relative frequencies of consumption of forty-three food items and regression models were fitted to assess the association between dietary patterns and body composition cha…

Relative validity of the Children's Eating Habits Questionnaire–food frequency section among young European children
Objective To compare, specifically by age group, proxy-reported food group estimates obtained from the food frequency section of the Children's Eating Habits questionnaire (CEHQ-FFQ) against the estimates of two non-consecutive 24 h dietary recalls (24-HDR). Design Estimates of food group intakes assessed via the forty-three-food-group CEHQ-FFQ were compared with those obtained by a computerized 24-HDR. Agreement on frequencies of intakes (equal …
Parental education and frequency of food consumption in European children
Objective To assess the relationship between parental education level and the consumption frequency of obesity-related foods in European children. Design The analysis was based on data from the cross-sectional baseline survey of a prospective cohort study. The effects of parental education on food consumption were explored using analysis of covariance and logistic regression. Setting Primary schools and pre-schools of selected regions in Italy, E…
Diet–obesity associations in children
Objective Measurement errors in dietary data lead to attenuated estimates of associations between dietary exposures and health outcomes. The present study aimed to compare and evaluate different approaches of handling implausible reports by exemplary analysis of the association between dietary intakes (total energy, soft drinks, fruits/vegetables) and overweight/obesity in children. Design Cross-sectional multicentre study. Setting Kindergartens/…
