  • A Monistic Conclusion to Aristotle’s Ergon Argument: The Human Good as the Best Achievement of a Human

Samuel Baker, Samuel H Baker•ARTICLE•Archiv für Geschichte der…•2021

Scholars have often thought that a monistic reading of Aristotle’s definition of the human good – in particular, one on which “best and most teleios virtue” ( Nicomachean Ethics I 7, 1098a17–18) refers to theoretical wisdom – cannot follow from the premises of the ergon argument. I explain how a monistic reading can follow from the premises, and I argue that this interpretation gives the correct rationale for Aristotle’s definition. I then explai…

  • The Concept of Ergon: Towards an Achievement Interpretation of Aristotle’s ‘Function Argument’

Samuel Baker, Samuel H Baker•CHAPTER•Oxford Studies in Ancient…•2015

In Nicomachean Ethics 1.7, Aristotle gives a definition of the human good, and he does so by means of the ‘ergon argument’. • Experience as a Barrier to Contestability in Airline Markets

Samuel Baker, Samuel H Baker et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1989

Contrary to one of the predictions of the contestability hypothesis, price in deregulated U.S. passenger airline markets is related to actual competition from diversifying former intrastates and newly established carriers. More important, former intrastates have a larger impact on price than do newly established firms--a result consistent with these markets being imperfectly competitive because of an industry experience barrier to entry. Unlike a…

  • Risk, Leverage and Profitability: An Industry Analysis

Samuel Baker, Samuel H Baker•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1973

T HIS study investigates the effect of financial leverage, or relatively greater use of debt capital, on industry profitability. Recently at least two cross-section studies have yielded the surprising result that systematically higher rates of return are earned by firms with relatively low leverage. Measuring leverage inversely as the ratio of equity to assets,' one would expect the rate of return on equity and this ratio to vary in opposite dire…
