  • An appraisal of sample preparation, analysis and some toxicological implications of ancient industrial metalliferous pollution

    F B Pyatt, FB Pyatt et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Metalliferous deposits are common worldwide. Some have been derived from activities following industrial revolutions in various countries, albeit at somewhat differing times. Others can trace their antiquity much further. This appraisal seeks to consider the associated activities of sample collection protocols and selected analytical procedures and considers results, in a broad-based manner, from diverse geographic areas of our planet which exhib…

  • Early-Holocene environments in the Wadi Faynan, Jordan

    Open Access•Chris O Hunt, Hwedi el-Rishi et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2004•Cited by: 6•References: 17

Evidence for early-Holocene environments in the Wadi Faynan in the rift-margin in souther Jordan is described. The early Holocene of Jordan is not well known and palynology, plant macrofossils and molluscs from Wadi Faynan provide evidence for a much more humid-forest-steppe and steppe-environment than the present stony desert and highly degraded steppe. The early-Holocene fluvial sediments in the Faynan catchment are predominantly fine-grained, …

  • Studies on the motility of the limpet patella vulgata in acidified sea‐water

    Theresa M bonner, F B Pyatt et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1993

Individuals of Patella vulgata were exposed to acidified seawater in an experimental tank in which tidal cydes were simulated. Acidification of seawater to a concentration of 2 × 10‐5 M HC1 was buffered at the expense of buffering ion reserves in the seawater. Greater concentrations of acid resulted in a pH change in the seawater which affected limpet motility; limpet movement was inhibited by seawater of pH 5.5, and at pH 2.5 limpets became immo…

  • Gamma radioactivity values from different soils and organisms on Skye, north west Scotland, five years post‐Chernobyl

    F B Pyatt, FB Pyatt et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1992

Values of γ‐radioactivity were monitored in three sites on the Island of Skye (Hebrides, Scotland) approximately five years after the explosion of the reactor at Chernobyl, USSR. The sites chosen were all closely associated and comprised a podsolized area together with two areas exhibiting substantial peat deposits. 137Cs concentrations in the vegetation were found to be low although enhanced accumulation, probably due to translocation from the l…

  • Factors affecting arthropod distribution and diversity in a snowfield in the Jotunheimen

    F B Pyatt, FB Pyatt et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1991

Invertebrates were sampled on and around a large snowfield, at an altitude of approximately 1400 m, in the mountains of the Jotunheimen, Western Norway, in late July. Thirty arthropod species and 103 individuals were recorded. There was a clearly defined and rapid decrease in both the number of species and individuals with increasing distance into the snowfield

  • Non Isatis Sed Vitrum Or, the Colour of Lindow Man

    Open Access•F B Pyatt, FB Pyatt et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•1991•Cited by: 3•References: 15

As part of the examination of the fragments of a further human body recovered from Lindow Bog, Cheshire, samples of skin were examined using electron probe X‐ray micro‐analysis. The ionic composition showed an excess of aluminium, silica and copper, with traces of titanium and zinc. These are interpreted as the residues of clay‐based copper and other pigments applied to the body. The literary evidence of the use of body paint amongst the Britons …

  • Ulvs Xxii

    Open Access•F B Pyatt, FB Pyatt et al.•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•1990•References: 8

White surface encrustations developing on basalt which had the same ‘reflectance signature’ on digital Landsat imagery as that from the limestone terrain in the Tripolitanian pre-desert are shown at the Wadi Gobbeen to be the thalli of the crustose lichen of the genus Aspicilia . The reproductive structures and ascospores of the lichen are described. The lichen is seen to be aiding the weathering and disintegration of the basalt cobbles. The abse…

  • Aspects of the Ecology of an upland Arctic periglacial site

    F B Pyatt, FB Pyatt et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1988

Aspects of the Ecology of an upland periglacial site adjacent to Sulitjelmabreen (Norway) are described. Marked changes in the vegetation and abiotic factors with increasing distance from the glacier are reported. The vegetation was generally limited in diversity and yielded an Ecosystem of low productivity

  • After chernobyl‐some data on radioactivity in scandinavia

    F B Pyatt, FB Pyatt•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1987

Data is presented on measurements of radioactivity recorded in material of soil, grass, and birch collected from various sites in Scandinavia during the period late July 1986 until mid‐August 1986. The values obtained near Otta, to the east of the Jotunheimen mountains are particularly enhanced. Birch was found to be a particularly useful bio‐indicator

  • Aspects of the ecology of Zygogonium ericetorum (Kütz) Hansg. on China clay tips

    C R Pope, Christopher Pope et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1984

The colonisation of china clay tips with particular reference to the role of the pioneer alga Zygogonium ericetorum is considered. The alga forms a mat over china clay waste and is particularly well developed on flat and damp areas. Steep slopes are subject to sheet and gully erosion and four principal categories of slope are recognised with regard to the colonising ability of the alga. The morphology of the alga appears to be affected by the ava…
