  • Prisoner Survival Inside and Outside of the Institution

    Open Access•Anne C Spaulding, R M Seals et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Epidemiology•2011

The life expectancy of persons cycling through the prison system is unknown. The authors sought to determine the 15.5-year survival of 23,510 persons imprisoned in the state of Georgia on June 30, 1991. After linking prison and mortality records, they calculated standardized mortality ratios (SMRs). The cohort experienced 2,650 deaths during follow-up, which were 799 more than expected (SMR = 1.43, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.38, 1.49). Morta…

  • Case-control study of lung cancer and truck driving in the Teamsters Union

N Kyle Steenland, Debra T Silverman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Cited by: 2•References: 7

We conducted a case-control study of lung cancer deaths in the Teamsters Union to compare the risk of different occupations within the teamsters, after controlling for smoking and other confounders. Occupations with no presumed exposure to diesel fumes were used as the nonexposed group. The study population consisted of 996 cases and 1,085 controls who had died in 1982-83 after applying for pensions. Next of kin provided information on smoking, w…

  • Occupational and other exposures associated with male end-stage renal disease

N Kyle Steenland, Michael J Thun et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Cited by: 10•References: 16

We conducted a case-control study of 325 men ages 30-69 who were diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) between 1976 and 1984, and resided in four urban areas of Michigan in 1984. Cases were selected from the Michigan Kidney Registry and excluded men with diabetic, congenital, and obstructive nephropathies. Controls were selected by random-digit dialing and were pair-matched to cases for age, race, and area of residence. Telephone intervie…
