  • Pharmaceutical stimulant diversion, 2002–2022

Mance E Buttram, Samantha Robinson et al.•ARTICLE•Drugs Education Prevention and…•2026

Background Nonmedical use (NMU) and diversion of stimulant medications methylphenidate and amphetamines is ongoing. Yet, data describing national diversion rates are not apparent. Methods Data were drawn from a survey of pharmaceutical diversion completed by law enforcement. Quarterly rates of pharmaceutical stimulant diversion (per 100,000 population) were calculated for the period 2002-2022. Analyses examined changes in diversion rates following…

  • HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Awareness among Individuals in Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder in the United States

    Open Access•Mance E Buttram, Matthew S Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2026

This study examined PrEP awareness among HIV-negative individuals in treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD; n = 179), and associations with demographic characteristics, sexual and injection behaviors, and treatment modalities. Overall, 48% of participants reported PrEP awareness. Bivariate logistic regression showed that, compared to others, individuals who were older, African American/Black, and in methadone treatment less frequently reported P…

  • Gabapentin-Related State Policies and Associations with Gabapentin Non-Medical Use Among a Nationally Representative Population in the United States

    Mance E Buttram, Matthew S Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2025

AIMS: Gabapentin is not a federally controlled substance, yet multiple states have implemented gabapentin-specific policies in response to non-medical use (NMU). This study aims to compare prevalence of gabapentin NMU by state policy type and examine the association between gabapentin NMU and gabapentin-related state policy types. METHODS: Data come from the Survey of Non-Medical Use of Prescription Drugs, which employed an online cross-sectional…

  • Recreational Ketamine Use among Individuals with Opioid Use Disorder

    Corinne L Chandler, Mance E Buttram et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2025

BACKGROUND: Data show that recreational ketamine use appears to be increasing. This study aimed to understand how ketamine fits into broader polysubstance use in individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). METHODS: Survey data were collected from a sample of treatment-seeking individuals with OUD in March 2022. RESULTS: < 0.002). Most respondents (70.9%) used ketamine to achieve a desired psychoactive effect, and 46.4% used to self-treat a physic…

  • The Informal, Non-Prescribed Use of Antiretroviral Medications for PrEP Among a National US-Based Sample of Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men

    Open Access•Mance E Buttram, Matthew S Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2024

This brief report presents findings on informal, non-prescribed PrEP use among an online sample of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (n = 196). Mean age was 33.4. Participants were Hispanic (13.3%), African American (15.8%), white (63.8%), and other race/ethnicity (6.6%). Informal PrEP users (11%) more frequently reported past year sexually transmitted infections (p < 0.001), group sex (p < 0.001), sex in public (p < 0.01), transa…

  • Associations Between Kratom-Related State Policy Environments and Kratom Use in a Nationally Representative Population in the United States

Matthew S Ellis, Mance E Buttram et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2023

Limited research has resulted in conflicting views on the risks versus benefits associated with kratom use. Despite no federal policy in the United States, individual states have implemented diverging policies through kratom bans, and legalization and regulation through Kratom Consumer Protection Acts (KCPAs). The Survey of Non-Medical Use of Prescription Drugs (NMURx) Program employs nationally-representative, repeated cross-sectional surveys on…

  • Young Adult Nightclub Participants Who Attend Adult Entertainment Clubs

    Open Access•Mance E Buttram, Matthew S Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2022

This secondary analysis of cross-sectional baseline data from an intervention trial study examines demographics, sexually transmitted infection (STI) history, substance use and sexual risk behaviors among young adult nightclub participants who do (n = 79) and do not (n = 419) frequent "strip" or adult entertainment clubs (AECs) in Miami, Florida. AEC patrons were older, and more likely to identify as Black race and report STI history. Compared to…

  • Shifting Pathways of Stimulant Use Among Individuals With Opioid Use Disorder

    Open Access•Matthew S Ellis, Zachary A Kasper et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Background: Stimulant use among individuals with opioid use disorder has recently increased, driven by changes in drug distribution channels. However, our understanding of polysubstance use is often limited by a need to provide targeted treatment to a primary drug of addiction. Yet there is a crucial need to better understand pathways to addiction, and how the use of multiple substances may differ between populations, as well as time periods. Met…

    Open Access•Matthew S Ellis, Zachary A Kasper et al.•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Dependence•2018

  • The Changing Face of Heroin Use in the United States

    Theodore J Cicero, Matthew S Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Psychiatry•2014

Our data show that the demographic composition of heroin users entering treatment has shifted over the last 50 years such that heroin use has changed from an inner-city, minority-centered problem to one that has a more widespread geographical distribution, involving primarily white men and women in their late 20s living outside of large urban areas.
