  • HIV Counseling and Testing Among Hispanics at CDC-Funded Sites in the United States, 2007

Denise Duran, Hussain R Usman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2010•References: 10

Objectives. We sought to determine whether Hispanic–White HIV testing disparities exist and to identify characteristics associated with newly diagnosed HIV among Hispanics. Methods. We used 2007 HIV Counseling and Testing System data to compare test-level records of Hispanics and non-Hispanic Whites, and we conducted a multivariate logistic regression analysis to identify characteristics associated with newly diagnosed HIV. Results. Relative to W…

  • Prevalence and correlates of HIV testing in a multi-site sample of young men who have sex with men

Esther Sumartojo, Cynthia M Lyles et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2008

This study assessed HIV testing among 2,621 urban young men who have sex with men (YMSM). Of these, 77% were men of colour, 30% reported recent unprotected anal intercourse (UAI), 22% had never tested for HIV and 71% had not tested recently. Ever testing was associated with older age (OR=1.28), being employed (OR=1.34), exposure to more types of HIV preventions (linear trend p=0.02), sex with a main partner (OR=1.92), sex with a non-main partner …

  • The Effectiveness of Individual-, Group-, and Community-Level HIV Behavioral Risk-Reduction Interventions for Adult Men Who Have Sex with Men

Open Access•Jeffrey H Herbst, Carolyn Beeker et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Preventive…•2007

  • Best-Evidence Interventions: Findings From a Systematic Review of HIV Behavioral Interventions for US Populations at High Risk, 2000–2004

Cynthia M Lyles, Linda S Kay et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2007

Objectives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s HIV/AIDS Prevention Research Synthesis Team conducted a systematic review of US-based HIV behavioral intervention research literature from 2000 through 2004 to identify interventions demonstrating best evidence of efficacy for reducing HIV risk. Methods. Standard systematic review methods were used. Each eligible study was reviewed on the basis of Prevention Research Synthesis Team effi…

  • Do prevention interventions reduce HIV risk behaviours among people living with HIV? A meta-analytic review of controlled trials

Nicole Crepaz, Cynthia M Lyles et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS•2006

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a meta-analytic review of HIV interventions for people living with HIV (PLWH) to determine their overall efficacy in reducing HIV risk behaviours and identify intervention characteristics associated with efficacy. METHODS: Comprehensive searches included electronic databases from 1988 to 2004, hand searches of journals, reference lists of articles, and contacts with researchers. Twelve trials met the stringent selection crit…

  • Improving the Reporting Quality of Nonrandomized Evaluations of Behavioral and Public Health Interventions: The TREND Statement

Don C Des Jarlais, Cynthia Lyles et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2004

Developing an evidence base for making public health decisions will require using data from evaluation studies with randomized and nonrandomized designs. Assessing individual studies and using studies in quantitative research syntheses require transparent reporting of the study, with sufficient detail and clarity to readily see differences and similarities among studies in the same area. The Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) st…

  • Des Jarlais Et Al. Respond

Don C Des Jarlais, Cynthia Lyles et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2004•References: 1

First, we would like to note our appreciation of Dzewaltowski and colleagues’ overall support for the TREND statement. There seems to be strong agreement that standards for the reporting of nonrandomized evaluations are greatly needed and that the TREND statement is an important step in this direction. However, the TREND statement is still clearly a work in progress. Dzewaltowski et al. suggest that the cost of the intervention be included in the…
