Reducing HIV Risks Among Active Injection Drug and Crack Users
The efficacy of Safety Counts, a CDC-diffused intervention, was reanalyzed. In a quasi experimental, cross-over design, injection drug users (IDU) and crack users in two neighborhoods were assigned by neighborhood to receive individual Voluntary HIV Counseling and Testing or Safety Counts and 78% were reassessed at 5-9 months. Drug users in the Safety Counts program reported significantly greater reductions in risky sex, crack and hard drug use, …

Correlates of Sex Trading Among Drug-Using Men Who Have Sex With Men
Objectives. We examined correlates of trading sex for money, drugs, and shelter, or food among drug-using men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods. Audio computer-assisted self-interviewing questionnaires were completed by 387 MSM. The association of predictors with sex trading was assessed with χ 2 tests and multiple logistic regression. Results. Sex-trading prevalence was 62.5% (95% confidence interval=57.7%, 67.4%). Sex trading was associated …
Drug-using men who have sex with men
Men who have sex with men (MSM) and use drugs are at high risk for HIV. This study assessed drug and sex-related risk behaviours and sexual identities for MSM drug injectors and crack smokers. One hundred and forty four MSM drug injectors and crack smokers from five USA cities were interviewed. One-third of the men were current injectors, twice as many reported lifetime injection. Most (56%) reported sex with women in the prior year; sex trading …
Reliability and Validity of Not-in-Treatment Drug Users' Follow-Up Self-Reports
Understanding HIV risks of chronic drug-using men who have sex with men
Focus groups and individual structured interviews were conducted in six cities with 98 predominantly street-recruited men who had a recent history of smoking crack or injecting drugs and who reported having had sex with other men (MSM) in the past year. Twenty-six focus groups explored the cultural and social context of participant's drug use and sexual activity and addressed outreach and HIV prevention issues pertinent to this population. Narrat…
Efficacy of Risk-Reduction Counseling to Prevent Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Sexually Transmitted Diseases
CONTEXT: The efficacy of counseling to prevent infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) has not been definitively shown. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of 2 interactive HIV/STD counseling interventions with didactic prevention messages typical of current practice. DESIGN: Multicenter randomized controlled trial (Project RESPECT), with participants assigned to 1 of 3 individual face-to…
Efficacy and Effectiveness Issues in the Nida Cooperative Agreement
This paper examines the Cooperative Agreement (CA) HIV intervention studies for active drug users, sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in terms of the constructs of prevention efficacy and effectiveness. A rationale is presented for conservatively interpreting outcome findings of these studies as indicative of intervention efficacy, as opposed to effectiveness. It is argued that the CA studies fall more within the domain of efficac…
Tuberculosis screening and compliance with return for skin test reading among active drug users
OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the independent and combined effects of different levels of monetary incentives and a theory-based educational intervention on return for tuberculosis (TB) skin test reading in a sample of active injection drug and crack cocaine users. Prevalence of TB infection in this sample was also determined. METHODS: Active or recent drug users (n = 1004), recruited via street outreach techniques, were skin tested for TB. The…
Reliability of Drug Users' Self-Reported HIV Risk Behaviors and Validity of Self-Reported Recent Drug Use
This study examined the reliability and validity of the Risk Behavior Assessment, a structured interview questionnaire designed to evaluate drug use and sexual HIV risk behaviors. Participants were 218 drug users currently not in treatment who completed the RBA two times over a 48-hour period and gave urine samples on both occasions. We examined internal consistency and test-retest reliability and found that, overall, drug users reliably report d…
