Understanding the Needs of Ontario Educators in Supporting Students With Acquired Brain Injury in the Classroom
BACKGROUND: When a child sustains an acquired brain injury (ABI), the impact extends to significant environments in their life, including school. Educator knowledge of ABI can influence a child's success with academic and social reintegration. An assessment of educator ABI knowledge was conducted to determine what information they require to support school reintegration. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach included a sampling of educators in a need…

Parental/Guardians' Connection to Nature Better Predicts Children's Nature Connectedness than Visits or Area-Level Characteristics
Serious attention and investments are being made by local, regional, and national organizations into policies and programs geared toward reconnecting children with nature to enhance children's well-being and the well-being of the planet. However, this attention and investment commonly focuses on access to, or time in, nature, rather than on nature connectedness, despite evidence consistently supporting the important role that nature connectedness…
A Measure of Nature Connectedness for Children and Adults
With benefits to both human well-being and pro-nature conservation behaviors, nature connectedness is emerging as an important psychological construct for a sustainable future. The growing research and applied and policy-related interests require a straightforward measure of nature connectedness that is suitable for both children and adult populations. To establish the reliability of the new Nature Connection Index (NCI) three factor analyses wer…
Depressive Symptoms and Length of U.S. Residency Are Associated with Obesity among Low-Income Latina Mothers
Latinos are the largest minority population group in the United States (U.S.), and low-income Latina women are at elevated risk of depression and obesity. Thus, the prevention of these two problems is a pressing public health concern in this population. Both depressive symptoms and obesity are modifiable factors that can be addressed by culturally relevant interventions. However, the association between depressive symptoms and obesity in Latina i…
Elucidating a Goal-Setting Continuum in Brain Injury Rehabilitation
For individuals with brain injury, active participation in goal setting is associated with better rehabilitation outcomes. However, clinicians report difficulty engaging these clients in goal setting due to perceived or real deficits (e.g., lack of awareness). We conducted a study using grounded theory methods to understand how clinicians from occupational therapy facilitate client engagement and manage challenges inherent in goal setting with th…

Shyness and Sociotropy
Sociotropy (an aspect of interpersonal dependence) and sociability (affiliative need) were examined as moderator variables of the relationship between shyness and interpersonal concerns in two studies. In Study 1, sociotropy, but not sociability, predicted unique variance in three indices of interpersonal concerns through both direct and interactive relations with shyness. An initial analysis in Study 2 showed that sociotropy, but not sociability…
Building a community‐based research partnership
The purpose of this article is to present a framework which describes the development of a community-based research partnership in a culturally distinct community. A research project, currently underway in collaboration with the Mohawk Nation of Akwesasne is described in which respect, equity, and empowerment(Akwesasne Task Force on the Environment, 1996), serve as guiding principles. Within this framework the dimensions of adapting styles of com…

Medium effects on children's story rewriting and story retelling
As part of a longitudinal study of the development of literacy skills, seven-year-old children wrote and told stories previously read to them. This partial replication of Geva & Olson (1983) examined the charac teristics of story rewriting by hand and by computer, as well as oral story retelling, and their relationships with reading comprehension. The productions of these second graders were comparable to Geva & Olson's six-year-olds' story retel…
