An Evaluation of the Replicable Factor Analytic Solutions Algorithm for Variable Selection
Observed variable and factor selection are critical components of factor analysis, particularly when the optimal subset of observed variables and the number of factors are unknown and results cannot be replicated across studies. The Replicable Factor Analytic Solutions (RFAS) algorithm was developed to assess the replicability of factor structures—both in terms of the number of factors and the variables retained—while identifying the “best” or mo…

A Variable Selection Algorithm for Creating Replicable Factor Structures
Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses are commonly employed to identify and explore underlying factor structures. Unfortunately, when variable selection is involved, results often fluctuate across studies making it difficult to determine the “best” and most replicable factor structure. This study proposes a new factor analysis variable selection algorithm called the Replicable Factor Analytic Solutions (RFAS) that incorporates sound statis…
Pathways by which case managers' match support influences youth mentoring outcomes
Keller's systemic model of youth mentoring posits there are multiple pathways through which all stakeholders in the youth mentoring process, including the program staff who support the match (or case managers), influence youth outcomes. This study examines case managers' direct and indirect contributions to match outcomes and tests how transitive interactions facilitate a theorized sequence of mentoring interactions to effect greater closeness an…
An investigation of the validity of a speaking assessment for adolescent English language learners
Given the increasing emphasis of communicative competence in English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts and the lack of validation research on speaking assessments for adolescent EFL learners, in the current study we examined the validity of the TOEFL Junior® speaking test, a relatively new speaking assessment developed by Educational Testing Service. We utilized Messick’s integrative view of construct validity (1996) and Kane’s interpretation …
An evaluation of the Behavior and Instructional Management Scale's psychometric properties using Portuguese teachers
Classroom management research is an important topic as teachers cannot effectively educate students in unstructured environments. With that said, few psychometrically sound measures are available to measure behavior and instructional management. Using 1520 Portuguese teachers, we evaluated the Behavior and Instructional Management Scale's (BIMS) psychometric properties using Bayesian estimation and found that the original 12-item scale provided r…
Evaluating Model Fit With Ordered Categorical Data Within a Measurement Invariance Framework
A paucity of research has compared estimation methods within a measurement invariance (MI) framework and determined if research conclusions using normal-theory maximum likelihood (ML) generalizes to the robust ML (MLR) and weighted least squares means and variance adjusted (WLSMV) estimators. Using ordered categorical data, this simulation study aimed to address these queries by investigating 342 conditions. When testing for metric and scalar inv…
Responses to climate and economic risks and opportunities across national and ecological boundaries
Climate changes on the Mongolian Plateau are creating new challenges for the households and communities of the region. Much of the existing research on household choices in response to climate variability and change focuses on environmental risks and stresses. In contrast, our analysis highlights the importance of taking into account environmental and economic opportunities in explaining household adaptation choices. We surveyed over 750 househol…
An Evaluation of a Theoretical Model Predicting Dieting Behaviors
This study evaluated a model linking internalization and dieting behaviors in a sample (n = 499) of Latina/o and White college students. Analyses revealed that the scales were invariant across ethnic and gender groups and generally supported the invariance of the proposed model across these groups. Analyses also revealed no ethnic mean differences between the constructs, but females did score higher than males on most constructs
Measurement Invariance of the Counselor Burnout Inventory Across Cultures
This study assessed scores from the Counselor Burnout Inventory for factorial validity, convergent and discriminant validity, internal consistency reliability, and measurement invariance across U.S. and Korean counselors. Although evidence existed for factorial validity across both groups, mixed results emerged for the other forms of validity and reliability. Measurement invariance analyses revealed that three of the five factors possessed measur…

Testing Measurement Invariance and Comparing Latent Factor Means Within a Confirmatory Factor Analysis Framework
Researchers commonly compare means and other statistics across groups with little concern for whether the measure possesses strong factorial invariance (i.e., equal factor loadings and intercepts/thresholds). When this assumption is violated, inaccurate inferences associated with statistical and practical significance can occur. This manuscript emphasizes the importance of testing for measurement invariance (MI) and provides guidance when conduct…
Rotation Criteria and Hypothesis Testing for Exploratory Factor Analysis
Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) has long been used in the social sciences to depict the relationships between variables/items and latent traits. Researchers face many choices when using EFA, including the choice of rotation criterion, which can be difficult given that few research articles have discussed and/or demonstrated their differences. The goal of the current study is to help fill this gap by reviewing and demonstrating the utility of se…
Factor Loading Estimation Error and Stability Using Exploratory Factor Analysis
Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is commonly employed to evaluate the factor structure of measures with dichotomously scored items. Generally, only the estimated factor loadings are provided with no reference to significance tests, confidence intervals, and/or estimated factor loading standard errors. This simulation study assessed factor loading estimation error under several experimental conditions and whether hypothesis testing and/or confide…
A Comparative Investigation of Rotation Criteria Within Exploratory Factor Analysis
Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is a commonly used statistical technique for examining the relationships between variables (e.g., items) and the factors (e.g., latent traits) they depict. There are several decisions that must be made when using EFA, with one of the more important being choice of the rotation criterion. This selection can be arduous given the numerous rotation criteria available and the lack of research/literature that compares …

Adoptees' and Birth Parents' Therapeutic Experiences Related to Adoption
This study examined adoptees' and birth parents' experiences in therapy, including the perceived level of helpfulness and preparation by therapists relating to adoption issues as a function of the year these experiences occurred. Participants consisted of 152 adoptees and 66 birth parents, with the majority (78%) of the respondents being female. Overall, adoption inquiry, addressing adoption issues, helpfulness, and preparedness by therapists inc…
