  • Giambattista Tiepolo's Frescoes for the Church of the Pieta in Venice

    David B Howard, D Howard•ARTICLE•Oxford Art Journal•1986

In 1762, on the second anniversary of the consecration of the new church of the Piet'a, the Venetian noble Pietro Gradenigo described the project in his chronicle as worthy of the 'grado ed universale compiacimento della Dominante' .1 Perhaps Gradenigo was not the most detached observer, for he had only recently been elected as one of the governors of the hospital.2 Nonetheless his praise was surely well deserved. Between the laying of the founda…

  • In the Wake of Kant

    Douglas A Howard, D Howard•ARTICLE•Telos•1986•Cited by: 1

The deconstructionist return to Kant was celebrated April 24-26, 1986 at the University of Minnesota, in a conference titled "In the Wake of Kant: Philosophy after the Third Critique." Among those present were Lyotard and Derrida, along with a host of literary critics and some scattered philosophers. The "wake" did not turn out to be either the smooth path left by a mighty ocean liner nor the well-oiled Irish kind known to lovers of Studs Lonigan…

  • La Lettre Internationale

    D Howard•ARTICLE•Telos•1985

La Lettre Internationale is a new, international journal, edited by Antonin Liehm in French (with Paul Noirot) and in Italian (with Federico Coen). German and Spanish editions are in the planning stages. Liehm is known not only as a film critic, social thinker and political commentator; he is also the former editor of Literamy Listy, the journal of the Czech writers' union that was one of the important elements in the creation of the Prague Sprin…

  • Getting Started on Myth

    Open Access•D C Howard, D Howard•ARTICLE•The Australian Journal of…•1978

Myths express what is significant during man’s experience, and so communicate at a deeper level than other stories. They should never be treated as pre-scientific attempts to explain how things began. The creation of myths met a much more profound and basic need. In presenting myths to children, there are many methods that can be used. Rather than just presenting one or two myths and leaving it at that, significance is gained by presenting childr…

  • Esprit

    D Howard•ARTICLE•Telos•1978•Cited by: 1

As the new director of Esprit, Paul Thibaud finds himself in an enviable, yet difficult and complex situation. Nearly half a century's tradition is a mixed blessing. The journal can call on contributors whose horizons extend beyond the tenacles of Paris, to the provinces, Europe and the Third World. Its reputation assures it a farflung readership and influence as well. Tradition can, of course, easily become habit and govern expectations: that is…

  • In Memory of Serge Mallet

    David M Howard, D Howard•ARTICLE•Telos•1974

The work of Serge Mallet—brutally interrupted as it was entering a new phase—was not well-known in the United States. Many of us knew the name, associated with the label “new working class,” which he coined. Few had read his work, and fewer knew the man and the movement behind it. His sudden death in a car accident stops the work and makes it into a theoretical corpus. The turning point in his work is May 1968. Untypical of the Parisian politico-…

  • Aspects of History and Class Consciousnes

    Donald R Howard, D Howard•ARTICLE•Telos•1972

The title of this collection and the “note” from Georg Lukács which begins it, suggest that Mészáros has put together a document posing important theoretical and practical questions in need of concrete elaboration and critical discussion. Lukács writes that “The question you raised, concerning the determination of class consciousness today, is fundamentally the same as a real analysis of the inherent nature of present-day capitalism: a task Marxi…
