The work of Serge Mallet—brutally interrupted as it was entering a new phase—was not well-known in the United States. Many of us knew the name, associated with the label “new working class,” which he coined. Few had read his work, and fewer knew the man and the movement behind it. His sudden death in a car accident stops the work and makes it into a theoretical corpus. The turning point in his work is May 1968. Untypical of the Parisian politico-intellectual, Mallet was a fish-in-the-water: he lived May ‘68 from the inside, not simply as a member of the Political Bureau of the PSU
