Australian Clinicians’ Capabilities, Opportunities, and Motivations in Implementing Exposure and Response Prevention for Youth with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Objectives: Informed by implementation science, this exploratory study examined the capabilities, opportunities, and motivations of Australian mental health clinicians ( N = 38) associated with the implementation of exposure and response prevention (ERP) for youth (i.e., children and adolescents) with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It also explored how the capabilities and motivations of mental health clinicians untrained in ERP for youth (…

An online experimental test of the compensatory process in hoarding disorder
Attachment theory suggests that strong object attachment in hoarding disorder (HD) may be due to an attempt at compensating for unmet relatedness needs. We tested this compensatory process with an online experiment and hypothesized that reducing loneliness among participants with high hoarding symptoms would result in lower object attachment, and that change in loneliness would mediate the impact of an online loneliness intervention on object att…
Treatment of Hoarding Disorder
Hoarding disorder (HD) is a chronic and debilitating psychological disorder with wide ranging negative effects on individuals, their families, and the community. In this chapter we review the current evidence for the use of pharmacological and psychological interventions in HD. Our review showed that cognitive-behavioral interventions are efficacious. However, many gaps and issues exist. In particular, research has not evaluated the efficacy of p…
Finding help for OCD in Australia
Objective People tend to live with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) for many years before receiving evidence-based treatment. This delay is partly due to a lack of access to information about which healthcare providers offer evidence-based treatment for OCD. This information was not easily accessible online for people in Australia. Methods In this study, we describe how an online directory of clinicians was developed and evaluated. We report on…
Determinants of object choice and object attachment
Background and aims Individuals who meet criteria for compulsive buying–shopping disorder (i.e., acquiring problems only) or hoarding disorder (i.e., acquiring and discarding problems) may acquire possessions to compensate for unmet belonging needs, but may do so in different ways. Those with compulsive buying–shopping disorder may acquire objects that they believe will relieve the distress associated with unmet belonging needs (e.g., objects tha…
Anger regulation in interpersonal contexts
The ability to regulate anger facilitates harmonious interactions with strangers, colleagues, friends, and romantic partners. We review the influence of four emotion regulation strategies (i.e., cognitive reappraisal, suppression, angry rumination, and mindfulness) on subjective anger experience, cardiovascular reactivity, and aggressive behavior. All studies included a real or implied social interaction (e.g., with a fictitious participant). We …
The effects of trait reappraisal and suppression on anger and blood pressure in response to provocation
Risk factors for suicide in psychiatric outpatients
To determine the risk factors for suicide, 6,891 psychiatric outpatients were evaluated in a prospective study. Subsequent deaths for the sample were identified through the National Death Index. Forty-nine (1%) suicides were determined from death certificates obtained from state vital statistics offices. Specific psychological variables that could be modified by clinical intervention were measured using standardized scales. Univariate survival an…
