Be Curious, Not Judgmental
Clifford Geertz’s analysis of a remote cockfight in a small village in Bali in 1972 remains relevant to contemporary audiences of sports entertainment at multiple levels. Geertz encourages readers to peer over the shoulder of an anthropologist, to grasp significance in seemingly straightforward behaviours of gambling and merriment and to challenge Jeremy Bentham’s Utilitarian concept of ‘deep play’, where he outlines a calculus of irrational (and…
A Runner's Journey
While the phrase mens sana in corpore sano does not appear in A Runner's Journey, the life of Bruce Kidd offers a compelling illustration of a sound mind in a sound body. Kidd's autobiography traces his life through three phases: (1) The Education of an Athlete, (2) The Education of an Activist, and (3) My Struggle for Canadian Sport. In every phase, Kidd combines physical and mental striving toward the progressive goal of social justice for all.…

Three specific scenarios are addressed: (1) recreational-level participants who intentionally …

In order for women to achieve bodily agency, we propose that fitness acti…
