  • ‘The change happens with our kids’

    Caitlin Grzyb, William Bridel•ARTICLE•Leisure/Loisir•2025

Books have an influential role in children’s understandings of identity and the (re)production of and resistance to social norms. With limited diversity in children’s literature about sport, two children’s books were created that had as their central plot a challenge to dominant gender norms in ice hockey and in figure skating. Nine parents with children 10 years old and younger read the books and then participated in semi-structured interviews. …

  • Children’s knowledge about play-related risk, risk-taking, and injury

Kyle S McCallum, Kyle McCallum et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure/Loisir•2024

Risk-taking in play has received increased focus in research over the last three decades through the use of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods. The purpose of this meta-study was to review the qualitative literature specifically to better understand how children (5–16 years of age) understand the concepts of risk, risky play, and injury in relation to their play experiences. Twenty-two studies were identified for inclusion in the meta-s…

  • The feasibility and impact of a painted designs intervention on school children’s physical activity

Janet B Wong, Kyle S McCallum et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure/Loisir•2023

Interventions such as painted designs on school tarmacs may increase children’s physical activity during school hours. This mixed-methods study examined the influence of a painted designs (e.g., traditional games, random circles) intervention on the physical activity experiences of elementary school children. Systematic observations and accelerometer data were collected to evaluate the type and quantity of student physical activity. Interviews we…

  • ‘I guess you just have to deal with it’

Vanessa Paglione, Sarah Kenny et al.•ARTICLE•Research in Dance Education•2023

Pre-professional ballet dancers are at high risk for musculoskeletal injuries, some of which are not reported and are self-managed by dancers themselves. Understanding the decisions that adolescent dancers make related to their dancing, pain, and injuries is relatively under-researched. Sociocultural contexts and the presence of social support (or not) may influence decisions and experiences of elite adolescent ballet dancers regarding their pain…

  • Improved access yet inequitable experience

    Open Access•Elisabeth Vesnaver, Terrie Butler‐Foster et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Findings highlight past experiences of exclusion in Canada as a unique and critical part of the context of the donation experience among MSM/2SGBTQ+. Despite the program's goals of greater inclusivity of MSM/2SGBTQ + individuals, the anticipated experience of the program included continued stigmatization and inequities. Future research should seek to understand the experienced views of MSM/2SGBTQ + donors to ensure that as policies change, polici…

Mannat Bansal, Benny Rana et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2023•References: 4

  • The role of peers and the recreational environment in adolescent emotional safety

Janet B Wong, Meghan H Mcdonough et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2022

Emotional safety is important for facilitating positive outcomes in afterschool programmes. Emotional safety is not clearly conceptualised, and participants’ understandings of, and experiences with how the social and built environment contribute to emotional safety in afterschool programmes is not well established. This qualitative case study examined early and middle adolescents’ experiences with their peers and the programme environment, and ho…

  • Awakening to Elsewheres

    Open Access•T Mcguire-Adams, J Joseph et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 11

“Mainstream” spaces of movement cultures within settler colonial states invite bodies that are White, cis, able, thin, and heterosexual, just as “mainstream” academic space validates knowledge about the world produced by these very subjects. Such mainstream assemblages are embedded within the broader structure of settler colonialism, mutually buttressed by White supremacy, heteropatriarchy, and (neo)imperialism. In this article, a Collective of s…

  • Striving for newcomer inclusion

Simon Barrick, William Bridel et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure/Loisir•2021

Sport participation is popularly constructed as an effective means for welcoming newcomers into their new country of residence, despite these claims being critiqued by sport scholars. In this study, we critically interrogated Intro to Sport programmes as one approach for welcoming newcomers into the Canadian sport system using Green’s normative theory of sport development to inform our work. Twenty qualitative interviews were conducted with progr…

William Bridel, Geneviève Rail•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•2007•Cited by: 29•References: 18

Placing the sporting body and Michel Foucault’s technologies of power and of the self at the center of our research inquiry, this article explores the ways in which 12 Canadian gay male marathoners discursively construct their bodies within and beyond the marathon context. Thematic analysis of the research materials (gathered through guided conversations, written stories, and the first author’s research journal) revealed four main themes: self-go…
