  • The Limits to Competition for Italy’s Universities

Open Access•Francesca Farabollini, Maurizio Franzini•ARTICLE•On the Horizon The International…•2001

In this issue A Voice from Pari comes from two participants at “The Future of the Academy” conference held in Pari in September 2001. Italian universities are in the midst of large‐scale reforms dictated by the Italian government. When one reads that, while graduates in most European countries can expect to start work in their early twenties, Italian students are not graduating until around the age of 27, it becomes clear why change is needed. • Effects of neonatal treatment with 1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-lodophenyl)-2 aminopropane HCI (DOI) and ritanserin on agonistic behavior in adult male and female rats

Open Access•Maria Emanuela Albonetti, María Isabel González et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1994•References: 20

The role played by the neonatal 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) system in the organization and sexual differentiation of adult agonistic behavior was investigated in rats. Focus was on the 5HT2 receptor subtype, which has been demonstrated to be involved in agonism control in the adult. 5HT2 activity was experimentally manipulated by administration of a specific agonist [1-(2, 5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl)-2-aminopropane HCl (DOI)] or antagonist (ritanseri…

  • Restraint increases both aggression and defence in female rats tested against same-sex unfamiliar conspecifics

    Open Access•Maria Emanuela Albonetti, Francesca Farabollini•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1993•References: 26

Female rate living in groups were subjeccted to single and repeated immobllization stress (Restraint, RT). Twenty-four hours after RT, or the last RT session in the case of repeated RT, social behavior was recored in encounters with unfamilar females, matched for age and body weight. Single RT caused an increase in agonistic behavior in both its aggression and defence aspects. This was a specific effect, as other behaviors, including introductory…

  • Organization of behavior in unfamiliar female rabbits

    Open Access•Maria Emanuela Albonetti, Francesco Dessì‐Fulgheri et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1991•References: 10

Under natural conditions, female European rabbits usually spend the whole of their life in their natal groups, establishing a network of stable relationships with their group-mates, particularly with other females. Indeed, female social interactions with groupmates are ultimately responsible for the dimension, structure, and cohesion of the group itself. Despite their importance in social organization, non-reproductive female behaviors are poorly…

  • Intrafemale agonistic interactions in the domestic rabbit (oryctolagus cuniculus L.)

    Open Access•Maria Emanuela Albonetti, Francesco Dessì‐Fulgheri et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1990•References: 14

Agonistic interactions between adult domestic rabbit females were observed. Females were housed in groups of four in outdoor enclosures measuring 4 × 4 m. Agonistic patterns included aggression (AG), flight (FL), and submission (SB). Observations focused on 1) initial interactions between unfamiliar females, concomitant with the formation and establishment of a social structure (Phase 1); and 2) interactions between familiar females organized in …
