Pragmatic Markers in Dutch
Pragmatic markers (PMs) contextualize speech acts and propositional content. They can be subcategorized on the basis of syntactic and functional criteria. Three subgroups of PMs in Dutch are focused on: discourse particles, focus particles, and modal particles. In this overview, recent research is summarized, both synchronic descriptive work and diachronic, sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic, and applied linguistic studies. Desiderata for future r…

Er is nog steeds geen partikelwoordenboek, hoewel echter het partikelonderzoek niet stilligt
There is still no dictionary of particles, although particle research is on-going This paper seeks to explain why there is (still) no comprehensive descriptive work of the particles of Dutch. It does so by focusing on a number of particles that appear to go against common wisdom concerning Dutch sentence structure, in particular V2-violations and wide scope particles that are deeply embedded in complex phrases
On the Dutch temporal adverbial goed en wel
The paper investigates the origin, the development, the semantics and the pragmatics of the temporal use of the Dutch expression goed en wel ‘good and well’. We argue that the expression has developed from a meaning “safe and sound” into an indicator of the end of a preparatory phase or transition period, as well as a marker of the beginning of a new state. We observe that temporal goed en wel always requires a secondary state of affairs that is …
All good and well
The Dutch expression goed en wel ‘good and well’ is polysemous. In one of its uses, goed en wel combines with a universal quantifier alles or allemaal ‘all’ and the conjunction maar ‘but’. The resulting construction is typically used to introduce a contrary reaction to an earlier utterance or suggestion. The combination is shown to fit into a larger class of pragmatic operators, which are argued to be instances of lexicalized pragmatics
Modal particle or emerging inflection
Dutch has a construction consisting of a verbal part and something else: ′wɛrksə ‘enjoy your work’ ( werk ‘to work’), ′rujzə ‘enjoy your rowing’ ( roei ‘to row’). According to accepted wisdom, this ‘success imperative’, as it is known in the literature, consists of an imperative and a pronoun ze ‘them’. The paper challenges the standard analysis and investigates two alternatives: an imperative form plus a modal particle, and a verbal stem plus an…
Roots of Afrikaans
Hans den Besten (1948-2010) made numerous contributions to Afrikaans linguistics over a period of nearly three decades. His writings helped shift the perspective on the roots of Afrikaans beyond Dutch to the structure and vocabulary of Khoekhoe, to Portuguese Creole, and to Malay varieties. This volume contains a selection of Den Besten’s most important papers – some of which originally appeared in less accessible journals – concerning the struct…

Negative Contexts
This research emphasizes semantic, syntactic and pragmatic considerations illustrating a wide array of linguistic approaches. Written from within the theoretical framework of Generalized Quantifiers, the three main areas considered are collocations, polarity items and multiple negations
Moeilijk is (not) difficult
Dutch adverbs such as moeilijk 'difficult(ly), with difficulty' and slecht 'badly' show some curious properties that their immediate English counterparts lack (other lexical items with comparable meaning and behavior are kwalijk, lastig and bezwaarlijk). 1 In many respects, these Dutch adverbs behave like weak negatives and are thus comparable to English hardly and scarcely. It will be argued that this behavior may be explained in terms of an asp…
