  • Leibniz against occasionalism and Newtonianism

Gaston Robert•ARTICLE•British Journal for the History…•2026

Leibniz famously charged occasionalism with entailing perpetual miracles (Objection from Perpetual Miracles = OPM). But he also extended this criticism to Newton’s theory of universal gravitation. Traditionally, scholars have interpreted this twofold application of OPM as stemming from different concerns in each case: while Leibniz’s anti-occasionalist OPM relies on the metaphysical idea that created substances must be endowed with intrinsic caus…

  • Panentheistic, monistic, non-necessitarian

Gaston Robert•ARTICLE•British Journal for the History…•2023

Discussions of Leibniz’s view of the relation between God and nature in 1675–1676 has split commentators into two competing camps. According to some scholars, Leibniz was a pantheistic substance monist in these years. However, other scholars think that he was neither a substance monist nor a pantheist. This paper advocates a middle ground between these two interpretations. With scholars in the first camp, it is argued that Leibniz was a substance…

  • Focal Dependence, Logical Priority and the Unity of Aristotle’s Metaphysics

    Open Access•Gaston Robert•ARTICLE•Kriterion Revista de Filosofia•2021

A long-standing problem in Aristotelian scholarship concerns the question of how to reconcile Aristotle’s twofold description of metaphysics as ontology (the universal science of being qua being) and theology (the science of the changeless and separate substance). An important attempt to answer this question (advanced first by G. Patzig) consists in saying that the changeless and separate substance is focally prior to (or the focal meaning of) su…

  • Perception and Pluralism

    Gaston Robert•ARTICLE•Archiv für Geschichte der…•2020

This article discusses Leibniz’s claim that every substance is endowed with the property of perception in connection with Platonism, rationalism and the problem of substance monism. It is argued that Leibniz’s ascription of perception to every substance relies on his Platonic conception of finite things as imitations of God, in whom there is ‘infinite perception’. Leibniz’s Platonism, however, goes beyond the notion of imitation, including also t…

  • Qué tan leibnizianos son los “leibnizianos” Wolff y Baumgarten? Reflexiones acerca de la teoría de la armonía preestablecida en ibniz, Wolff y Baumgarten

    Open Access•Gaston Robert•ARTICLE•Ideas y Valores•2013•References: 13
