  • “A contribution to my country”

Marie Quinn, John Buchanan•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Education•2022

International attention to improving learning outcomes has increasingly focused on the impact of teachers, those that directly implement national education goals. For small, resource-poor countries where communities have minimal schooling experience, the role of the teacher in building academic knowledge and skills is even more valued, to both support that community and the nation as a whole. Yet governments and other stakeholders may not know mu…

  • SFL in Solomon Islands

    Open Access•Marie Quinn•ARTICLE•Íkala Revista de Lenguaje y Cultura•2021

Assessing and reforming classroom literacy has become a preoccupation of nations worldwide, not the least in the Pacific where countries are often working toward literacy in English within multilingual contexts. In Solomon Islands, in 2013, the poor results in regional and local literacy testing precipitated a review of how the English language was taught in primary schools across this multilingual nation. In the subsequent reform of classroom li…

  • Semantic Change in Portuguese

Open Access•Daniel Marra, Marie Quinn et al.•ARTICLE•GEMA Online Journal of Language…•2020

This paper highlights the process by which meaning instantiates itself in word formation and discusses how semantic change installs subsequently in them, in this case, the Portuguese words cerrado and vereda . These two words have long individual histories that can be tracked back to their Latin or Celtic etymons, cerrado rooted in the origin of the Latin verb serāre , which gave origin to the Portuguese verb cerrar (to close, to seal) and vereda…

  • Señora, diak!”

    Open Access•Marie Quinn•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2020•References: 7

This article takes place in not one taxi, but all the taxis I have caught in Timor-Leste, encapsulating first encounter conversations I have had across the country, where my “otherness” as a Señora, an Australian who towers over the local population is contrasted to my knowledge of the country. I take a reflexive approach to explore how my identity as a work colleague and researcher has been constructed by many factors. Such encounters as I typif…

  • Mind the gap

    Ritesh Shah, Marie Quinn•ARTICLE•Compare A Journal of Comparative…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 8

Increasingly, the imperative for improving educational quality in schooling systems throughout the developing world is harnessed to a particular set of teaching and learning practices, such as child-centred, child-friendly or learner-centred pedagogy (LCP). Such was the case in Timor-Leste where, after independence, LCP was heavily promoted as a panacea for an education system that was perceived to be irrelevant, outmoded and of poor quality. Whi…

  • Talking to learn in Timorese classrooms

    Marie Quinn•ARTICLE•Language Culture and Curriculum•2013•Cited by: 5

In both multilingual and monolingual school settings, the manner in which teachers mediate classroom talk has a direct impact on the way that students are given access to curriculum content and the links established between thinking and learning. Classroom talk includes the ways in which teachers present content as well as the ways in which students interact with the subject matter that they are learning. However, in multilingual settings, the fo…
