  • Remarks on quantum mechanics and non-reflexive logic

    Open Access•Newton C A Da Costa, Newton Da Costa•ARTICLE•THEORIA An International Journal…•2024

In this paper we discuss and outline a version of non-relativistic quantum mechanics based on a new non-reflexive logic, where the basic entities (elementary particles) lack identity conditions. Some relationships with quantum field theories are also sketched

  • Science and Partial Truth: A Unitary Approach to Models and Scientific Reasoning

Newton C A Da Costa, Steven French•BOOK•Science and Partial Truth•2003

In the past thirty years, two fundamental issues have emerged in the philosophy of science. One concerns the appropriate attitude we should take towards scientific theories — whether we should regard them as true or merely empirically adequate, for example. The other concerns the nature of scientific theories and models and how these might best be represented. This book looks at these two issues together by arguing that theories and models should…

  • Models, Theories, and Structures: Thirty Years On

    Open Access•Newton C A Da Costa, Newton Da Costa et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2000•Cited by: 13•References: 18

Thirty years after the conference that gave rise to The Structure of Scientific Theories , there is renewed interest in the nature of theories and models. However, certain crucial issues from thirty years ago are reprised in current discussions; specifically: whether the diversity of models in the science can be captured by some unitary account; and whether the temporal dimension of scientific practice can be represented by such an account. After…

  • Lógicas normativas, moral y derecho

Open Access•Leila Zardo Puga, Newton C A Da Costa et al.•ARTICLE•Critica•1991

The relationships between moral and legal codes, that is, between specific normative sets, is a traditional problem of ethics, politics and law philosophy. Deontic logics have provided some instruments for a deeper analysis of those relations. The authors try to analyze the logical consequences of the adoption of different axiomaticallogical systems, where deontic modalities are introduced as expressing different senses of moral or legal obligati…

  • The Model-Theoretic Approach in the Philosophy of Science

    Open Access•Newton C A Da Costa, Steven French•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1990•Cited by: 36•References: 26

An introduction to the model-theoretic approach in the philosophy of science is given and it is argued that this program is further enhanced by the introduction of partial structures. It is then shown that this leads to a natural and intuitive account of both “iconic” and mathematical models and of the role of the former in science itself

  • On the Logic of Belief

    Newton C A Da Costa, Steven French•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•1989•Cited by: 1

The whole intellectual life consists of beliefs, and of the passage from one belief to another by what is called 'reasoning'. Beliefs give knowledge and error; they are the vehicles of truth and falsehood. Psychology, theory of knowledge, and metaphysics revolve about belief, and on the view we take of belief our philosophical outlook largely depends. (Bertrand Russell, The Analysis of Mind [London, 1921], p. 231.)

  • Pragmatic Truth and the Logic of Induction

    Newton C A Da Costa, Steven French•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•1989•Cited by: 12•References: 10

We apply the recently elaborated notions of ‘pragmatic truth’ and ‘pragmatic probability’ to the problem of the construction of a logic of inductive inference. It is argued that the system outlined here is able to overcome many of the objections usually levelled against such attempts. We claim, furthermore, that our view captures the essentially cumulative nature of science and allows us to explain why it is indeed reasonable to accept and believ…

  • Belief and Contradiction

    Open Access•Newton C A Da Costa, Steven French•ARTICLE•Critica•1988

    Open Access•Leila Zardo Puga, Newton C A Da Costa•ARTICLE•Critica•1987

Our starting point, in this basically expository paper, is the study of a classical system of deontic propositional logic, classical in the sense that it constitutes an extension of the classical propositional calculus. It is noted, then, that the system excludes ab initio the possibility of the existence of real moral dilemmas (contradictory obligations and prohibitions), and also can not cope smoothly with the so-called prima facie moral dilemm…

  • Pragmatic truth and approximation to truth

Open Access•Irene F Mikenberg, Irene Mikenberg et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Symbolic Logic•1986

There are several conceptions of truth, such as the classical correspondence conception, the coherence conception and the pragmatic conception. The classical correspondence conception, or Aristotelian conception, received a mathematical treatment in the hands of Tarski (cf. Tarski [1935] and [1944]), which was the starting point of a great progress in logic and in mathematics. In effect, Tarski's semantic ideas, especially his semantic characteri…
