  • Mapping associations of polygenic scores with autistic and ADHD traits in a single city region

Open Access•Zoe E Reed, Richard Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2025

BACKGROUND: The genetic and environmental aetiology of autistic and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) traits is known to vary spatially, but does this translate into variation in the association of specific common genetic variants? METHODS: We mapped associations between polygenic scores for autism and ADHD and their respective traits in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (N = 4,255-6,165) across the area surroundin…

  • A Systematic Review of Gender Dysphoria Measures in Autistic Samples

Open Access•Karl Mears, Dheeraj Rai et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2024

This systematic review investigated how studies have measured gender dysphoria (GD) in autistic samples and the impact of using different measures on study results. The literature search identified 339 relevant papers, with 12 of them meeting the inclusion criteria. Results showed that seven different measures of GD characteristics have been used with autistic samples and that the studies consistently reported a greater number of GD characteristi…

    Open Access•Alex S F Kwong, Rebecca M Pearson et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Psychiatry•2021

Background The COVID-19 pandemic and mitigation measures are likely to have a marked effect on mental health. It is important to use longitudinal data to improve inferences. Aims To quantify the prevalence of depression, anxiety and mental well-being before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, to identify groups at risk of depression and/or anxiety during the pandemic. Method Data were from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (…

  • Trajectories of autistic social traits in childhood and adolescence and disordered eating behaviours at age 14 years

Open Access•Francesca Solmi, Francesca Bentivegna et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2021

BACKGROUND: Some people with eating disorders have difficulties with social communication. However, no longitudinal evidence regarding the direction of this association exists. We investigated trajectories of autistic social traits across childhood and adolescence in adolescents with and without disordered eating behaviours in early adolescence. METHODS: We used data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Our disordered eating …

  • Inside, outside and in‐between

Open Access•Nura Aabe, Fiona Fox et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2019

BACKGROUND: Co-production is predicated on equal power-sharing and responsibility in research partnerships. However, relatively few accounts exist that explore the subjective experience of how co-researchers achieve such equality, from the perspectives of public contributors and researchers. AIM: This paper aims to provide a unique insight into the process of co-production, by weaving personal reflections with principles to evaluate the impact ar…

We aimed to provide updated HALE and DALYs for geographies worldwide and evaluate ho…

  • Country- and individual-level socioeconomic determinants of depression

Open Access•Dheeraj Rai, Pedro Zitko et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Psychiatry•2013

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and correlates of depression vary across countries. Contextual factors such as country-level income or income inequalities have been hypothesised to contribute to these differences. AIMS: To investigate associations of depression with socioeconomic factors at the country level (income inequality, gross national income) and individual (education, employment, assets and spending) level, and to investigate their relative c…

  • Psychological distress and risk of long-term disability

Dheeraj Rai, Kyriaki Kosidou et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 37

BACKGROUND: Common mental disorders are known to cause long-term disability, although not much is known about long-term consequences of milder forms of psychological distress. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between increasing levels of psychological distress and 5-year risk of long-term disability pensions awarded for somatic or psychiatric conditions. METHODS: In this longitudinal population-based study, a cohort of 17,205 individuals…
