Modelled effect on mesothelioma mortality of the asbestos ban in Italy and the subsequent phases of exposure
BACKGROUND: In Italy, the 1992 asbestos ban prohibited all forms of asbestos production, use and importation. The epidemiological surveillance of mesothelioma mortality and incidence enabled the assessment of the ban's impact and subsequent phases in asbestos exposure patterns. METHODS: To estimate the effects of the ban, a quasi-Poisson generalised linear model was used to fit past asbestos consumption with mesothelioma mortality by gender, usin…
Cancer mortality and sectors of employment
The results showed an increased risk of cancer death in some traditional industrial sectors compared to the reference category of insurance activities such as construction and wood and leather products and limited evidence in sectors like cleaning, accommodation and food services and hairdressing. The adopted method proved to be effective in monitoring occupational risks and activating proper prevention initiatives and further insights
Assessment of Occupational Carcinogenic Risk by Comparing Data from the Italian Register of Occupational Exposures to Carcinogens (Sirep) with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (Iarc) Ev…
In Italy, the National Register on Occupational Exposure to Carcinogens (SIREP) is established pursuant to article 243 of Legislative Decree 81/2008 and is aimed to collect information on the exposure of workers to carcinogens transmitted by employers. The aim of this study is to assess its level of implementation comparing prevailing carcinogens reported in SIREP with the monitoring of risks in the workplace evidenced by the International Agency…
Sector of Employment and Mortality
Administrative data can be precious in connecting information from different sectors. For the first time, we used data from the National Social Insurance Agency (INPS) to investigate the association between the occupational sectors and both non-accidental and accidental mortality. We retrieved information on occupational sectors from 1974 to 2011 for private sector workers included in the 2011 census cohort of Rome. We classified the occupational…
Occupational Mortality Matrix
Mortality from occupational diseases significantly afflicts society, in terms of both economic costs and human suffering. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimated that 2.4 million workers die from work-related diseases every year. In Europe, around 80,000 workers die from cancer attributed to occupational exposure to carcinogens. This study developed the Occupational Mortality Matrix (OMM) aimed to identify significant associations b…
An innovative approach to identify past exposure to asbestos integrating questionnaire information and administrative data
Predictors of Lung Cancer Risk
Lung cancer (LC) mortality remains a consistent part of the total deaths occurring worldwide. Its etiology is complex as it involves multifactorial components. This work aims in providing an epidemiological assessment on occupational and environmental factors associated to LC risk by means of an ecological study involving the 8092 Italian municipalities for the period 2006-2015. We consider mortality data from mesothelioma as proxy of asbestos ex…
