    Christine Hélot, Anna Stevanato•ARTICLE•Enfances & Psy•2020•References: 1

  • Multilingual Education and Language Awareness

    Open Access•Christine Hélot•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2012

The role of languages in education is both a central and a contentious issue faced by most education systems in the world today, because many teachers have to contend with multilingual students being schooled in languages other than their mother tongues.

  • The Notion of Diversity in Language Education

Christine Hélot, Andrea Young•ARTICLE•Language Culture and Curriculum•2005•Cited by: 8

This paper will present an analysis of the notion of cultural and linguistic diversity in the new curriculum for primary schools in France (MEN, 2003). First, it will explain how this notion is linked both to a wider choice of languages and to the teaching of one foreign or regional language only. We shall argue that, despite the wide theoretical choice of languages and the purported ministerial objective of 'familiarisation' with linguistic and …

  • Language Awareness and/or Language Learning in French Primary Schools Today

    Andrea Young, Christine Hélot•ARTICLE•Language Awareness•2003

The paper presents the language policies being implemented in French primary schools under the present educational reform and considers how they tackle the question of sociocultural and linguistic pluralism. It questions the choice of teaching one foreign language from a very early age at kindergarten rather than opting for a model of language awareness which takes into account the various languages spoken outside school by a growing number of ch…

  • Bilingualism and Language Education in French Primary Schools

Christine Hélot, Andrea Young•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2002

While bilingual education programmes in European mainstream languages are becoming increasingly popular in France, the bilingualism of migrant children remains overlooked and is believed by many to delay the acquisition of French. An institutionalised language hierarchy lies all too often unchallenged within the French education system and linguistic policies for primary schools, while trying to develop foreign language learning from the earliest…

  • Bringing up children in English, French and Irish

    Christine Hélot•ARTICLE•Language Culture and Curriculum•1988•Cited by: 3

Two case studies of children being brought up trilingually, (English, French and Irish) are presented. Patterns of language use are described and compared for the three languages, with the emphasis on function more than degree of proficiency. It is shown that the use of the minority language (Irish) is dependent on the exclusion of the majority language (English). The paper also looks at the validity of Lambert's (1975) distinction between ‘addit…
