The House of Commons notebook of Pryse Campbell MP, March–April 1756
This article reproduces the contents of a small notebook detailing, in a highly abbreviated form, the house of commons debate of 29 March 1756 regarding the use of Hanoverian and Hessian troops to defend Britain from invasion by the French, necessitated by the abysmal state of the home defences. In a separate, very short, section, the notebook details amendments to be made to the Militia Bill, which was enacted in 1757, to reform the militia in E…
Ethnic Competition and the Forging of the Nation-State of Fiji
Since independence in 1970, ethnic rivalry between Fiji's indigenous and Indian populations has become increasingly manifested in the political arena, as demonstrated in the coups of 1987 and 2000. The root of this rivalry is seen here to lie in an ongoing ‘cold war’ for framing the defining qualities of the Fijian nation. Mobilizing this are differing community experiences of the country's past and hopes for its future. These differing experienc…
Giffen Goods, the Survival Imperative, and the Irish Potato Culture
This paper modifies the modern explanation of Giffen behavior by incorporating the classical emphasis on subsistence. Specifically, the calculated redirection of consumption priorities by those reduced to subsistence levels is embodied in the utility function and the biological necessity of consuming sufficient nutrition to support health is modeled as a subsistence constraint. This methodology is then applied to the potato culture that existed i…
Injuries and physical stress
After classifying injuries, and giving examples of the ways in which they can arise, treatment, rehabilitation and the value of exercise are considered. Having given a review of the effects of increasing leisure time and sports participation, the value of legislation, education, protective clothing and close supervision in preventing the occurrence of injuries in sport are discussed.
Hemoglobin variations on a small bahamian island
Hemoglobin characteristics were investigated in 492 blood specimens collected in a small island community (1,450 inhabitants) in the Bahamas. Using two different methods, abnormal variants were detected in 20.3% of the sample, including genotypes AS, AC, AF(A/HPFH), SC, and SF. Biodemographic evidence suggests that the origin and distribution of the hemoglobinpathies in this population have been influenced by historical migrations and genetic dri…

Measuring the Effectiveness of Contraceptive Marketing Programs
The Preethi marketing program resulted in sales of more than 11 million condoms during its first 33 months, multiplying Sri Lanka's annual per capita condom use by a factor of five. Estimates for 1974 show 144,000 new acceptors (8% of married women of reproductive age), totaling 50,000 couple-years of protection. It is also estimated that more than half of the nation's 1.8 million couples of childbearing age were educated about the function of a …
