This is the fourth article in a series of eight that comprise a special issue on family-centered early intervention (FCEI) for children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and their families, FCEI-DHH. This article describes the co-production team and the consensus review method used to direct the creation of the 10 Principles described in this special issue. Bilingual spelling patterns in middle school
This study examined the Spanish and English spelling patterns of bilingual adolescents, including the cross-linguistic effects of each language, by applying a fine-grained measure to the differences in spelling in naturalistic writing. Spelling errors were taken from narrative and expository writing samples provided by 20 Spanish–English bilingual adolescents (n = 160). Errors were coded by categories (phonological, orthographic, and morphologica…
Methods for controlling amount of talk
The aim of this article is to focus researchers’ attention on some central methodological issues involving control of amount of talk (AOT). First, appropriate methods for standardizing the size of language samples are considered. Second, the common practice of deriving linguistic rates by dividing the frequency of some linguistic variable of interest by a frequency tapping AOT is challenged. This operation does not adequately control for AOT and …
Partial Phonological Marking Facilitates the Acquisition of Noun Subclasses
This is a partial replication of Brooks, Braine, Catalano, Brody, and Sudhalter (1993). 32 participants learned a miniature linguistic system (MLS). Vocabulary of the MLS consisted of an actor subject, two sets of 19 object nouns, and two sets of three suffixes. In the experimental language, 60% of the nouns were phonologically marked with a common ending for each class; in the control, these endings were distributed across the classes. Participa…
