Change in Reputation as an Index of Genius and Eminence
Many previous investigations have relied on entries in encyclopedias or similar sources (e.g., Who's Who) to quantify eminence and achievement. The premises in these earlier studies have been that eminence is a function of reputation and that reputation is accurately captured by encyclopedias and the like. In this article, the authors examine reputational changes from era to era. They expected that a comparison of encyclopedias from different era…
Single-factor scoring validation for the Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI) in patients with systemic sclerosis and comparison with early rheumatoid arthritis patients
Development and Validation of a Rasch-Derived CES-D Short Form.
The current study presents a Rasch-derived short form of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale (CES-D) for use as a depression screening tool in the general population. In contrast to short forms developed with reliance on classical measurement techniques, those developed using techniques based on item response theory produce a measure that offers true interval scaling, provide enhanced information about responders with extreme sc…
Latent Relationships of Fluid, Visual, and Simultaneous Cognitive Tasks
Horn's 1989 fluid intelligence and Luria's 1966 simultaneous processing have been represented in various cognitive assessment batteries. Although related, these concepts are purported to measure distinct cognitive functions; fluid intelligence refers to deductive reasoning whereas simultaneous processing refers to understanding complex relationships among gestalts. The current study explored the factor structure of known fluid and simultaneous te…
Effects of a Behavioral Intervention, Tai Chi Chih, on Varicella-Zoster Virus Specific Immunity and Health Functioning in Older Adults
OBJECTIVE: Both the incidence and severity of herpes zoster (shingles) increase markedly with increasing age in association with a decline in varicella-zoster virus (VZV) specific cell-mediated immunity (CMI). This study examined whether a behavioral intervention, Tai Chi Chih (TCC), affects VZV specific immunity and health functioning in older adults who, on average, show impairments of health status and are at risk for shingles. METHODS: Thirty…

Multimethod Validation of the Beck Depression Inventory-Ii and Grossman-Cole Depression Inventory With an Inpatient Sample
Multimethod Validation of the Beck Depression Inventory—II and Grossman-Cole Depression Inventory with an Inpatient Sample
Psychometric examination of the Beck Depression Inventory-II has been adequate and varied for outpatient and nonclinical samples, but is still comparatively scant for inpatient psychiatric samples. In particular, important factor analytic questions have not been assessed on inpatient samples at all. Given that over time alone (regardless of symptom change) test scores on depression measures can spuriously drop, a convergent psychometric analysis …
Differentiation of Fluid, Visual, and Simultaneous Cognitive Tasks
The constructs of fluid reasoning and spatial visualization (Horn, 1989) as well as the construct of simultaneous processing (Luria, 1966) have been tapped by various cognitive assessment batteries. In order to determine whether these constructs could be differentiated from one another, factor analyses of subtest scores from six cognitive tasks were conducted. Fluid reasoning, spatial visualization, and simultaneous processing emerged as separate…
Written Expression, Hooper, and Blind Rating
Much research has supported the assertion of Hooper, et al.'s 1994 claims that specific stimuli perform better than others in eliciting well-developed written responses; however, previous research was conducted with raters who were aware of the hypotheses. The present study of 29 middle school children validated previous support for Hooper, et al.'s assertions by implementing blind rating and, once again, finding that significant differences betw…
Exploring Effects of Different Pictorial Stimuli on Written Expression
This study explored how the type of pictorial stimulus affects the quality of an individual's written expression. Cole, Muenz, Ouchi, Kaufman, and Kaufman in 1997 furnished initial evidence supporting Hooper, et al.'s 1994 theory. A pictorial stimulus different from that used by Cole, et al. was developed from Hooper, et al.'s specifications, i.e., pictorial stimuli should be photographs rather than line drawings, should have a clear protagonist …
K–ABC Simultaneous Processing, Das Nonverbal Reasoning, and Horn's Expanded Fluid-Crystallized Theory
Horn's distinction between--fluid intelligence (Gf) and visualization (Gv) was investigated with two Nonverbal Reasoning subtests from the Differential Ability Scales and three Simultaneous Processing subtests from the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children. The sample comprised a predominantly Euro-American groups of 57 normal boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 12 years. Principal factor analysis yielded clear-cut Gf and Gv dimensions. Th…
Interrater Reliability of the Written Expression Subtest of the Peabody Individual Achievement Test-Revised
This study examined the interrater reliability of the measure of written expression in the Peabody Individual Achievement Test-Revised. A sample more diverse in years of education and age than the normed population was used in this study. Fifty subjects from California, comprised of 72% females and 74% Caucasians, and ranging in age from 13 to 46, comprised the sample. Subjects were administered the "box" prompt from the PIAT-R Written Expression…
