  • Bull's-eye agency in audiovisual adaptations of Oliver Twist (1838), by Charles Dickens

    Open Access•Helena Lopes•ARTICLE•Diacrítica•2026

Arguing for the hypothesis of a blurring of cultural boundaries between the economically disadvantaged Victorian population and non-human animals operated by Dickensian rhetoric in Oliver Twist, this study seeks to demonstrate how audiovisual adaptations of the novel increasingly exponentiate the agency, subjectivity and protagonism of the character Bull's-eye, the dog of the villain Bill Sikes, in an attempt to satisfy the ever less speciesism c…

  • Precarity and dualism in higher education diagnosing their consequences and assessing Portuguese and Spanish policies

M Asensio, André Luiz Pinto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Higher Education…•2025•References: 6

  • The Centrality of Work: A Foundation for Political Economy

    Helena Lopes•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2021•References: 4

Building on Alfred Marshall's claim that political economy should be a science of activities rather than a science of wants, the paper proposes to ground political economy on the centrality of work. Work is central in three different senses: (i) factual — work plays a central role in human lives and societies; (ii) epistemic — giving work center stage has constitutive theoretical effects; (iii) political — work is a primary tool of and for the tr…

  • The (De)Politicisation of Work - An Inquiry into the Political Function of Work

    Open Access•Helena Lopes•ARTICLE•Revista crítica de ciências…•2019•References: 31

The paper revisits the debate on the political function of work, defined as the contribution of work to the production and transformation of social relations, in both conceptual and empirical terms. It begins by briefly recalling the terms of the debate about the emancipatory potential of work as seen by Karl Marx and Hannah Arendt, and then proceeds to argue, contra Arendt, that since work is a collective and cooperative activity, it is not a-po…

  • Asymmetric Labor Market Reforms: Effects on Wage Growth and Conversion Probability of Fixed-Term Contracts

Open Access•Marta Silva, Luís Filipe Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2018•References: 34

The authors investigate the impact of a change in employment protection laws in Portugal that increased the maximum legal duration of fixed-term contracts. They find that this reform led to a reduction in the probability that a worker on a fixed-term contract would be converted to a permanent contract. In addition, those workers who had their contracts converted experienced a significantly higher hourly wage growth at the time of conversion and f…

  • Agency theory and social interactions at work

    Helena Lopes•ARTICLE•Review of Social Economy•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 41

The main aim of this paper is to show that even when integrating the findings of behavioral economics, agency theory’s conception of interactions at work does not actually account for cooperative behavior. The paper draws on the distinction between the concepts of individual and person to critically examine this conception and show that, while work is mostly organized on the assumption that workers are self-interested individuals, management rhet…

  • The Integration of Care in the Portuguese NHS – A methodological proposal

Open Access•Rui Santana, Helena Lopes et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015

Introduction: The lack of integration of care in Portugal is perceived as a major constrain to the health system and, consequently, to the quality of care provided to patients. The improvement of integration is seen as a more effective way to provide quality care and to optimize scarce resources available. There were identified more than 175 definitions published in scientific papers (Armitage et al., 2009), and consensually adopted the WHO (2008…

  • The Relational Dimension of Identity—Theoretical and Empirical Exploration

Helena Lopes, Teresa Calapez•ARTICLE•Review of Social Economy•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 23

Identity has been recently introduced as a “legitimate” subject matter in economics. Whereas the social nature of identity is consensually acknowledged, its relational and moral dimensions are overlooked. We begin by clarifying the role of interpersonal relations in identity formation. Following Honneth (1995 Honneth, A. 1995. The Struggle forRrecognition—The Moral Grammar of Social Conflicts, Cambridge, MA: Polity Press. [Google Scholar]) we arg…

  • From Self-Interest Motives to Justice Motives: The Challenges of Some Experimental Results

    Open Access•Helena Lopes•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2008•Cited by: 4•References: 18

This article begins by presenting experimental evidence that remains unexplained by standard and utility-extended economic models: experimental subjects tend to honor their promises even on occasions when an assessment of consequences asks them to defect; subjects voluntarily contribute to collective goods, and this contribution is highly conditional on others contributing as well; subjects evaluate and value the intentions behind actions as well…
