Positive youth development (PYD) programs have significant health and well-being benefits, but these are rarely examined in low- or middle-income countries such as South Africa. LifeMatters is a 10-session PYD program combining elements of sport psychology and cognitive behavioural theory. We conducted a pragmatic trial of LifeMatters, implemented by trained university student facilitators with three groups of South African adolescents (n = 28; a…

In its contemporary form, sport for development has been positioned as an important part of strategic policy for a variety of governmental and sporting organisations. One area that has been targeted by governments and a variety of sporting partners has been the impact of sport on non-communicable diseases (NCDs, sometimes colloquially referred to as ‘lifestyle diseases’ such as obesity). However, relatively little evidence exists for the impact o…

  • Assessing Self- and Peer-assessment

Stephanie Hanrahan, Stephanie J Hanrahan et al.•ARTICLE•Higher Education Research &…•2001

Self- and peer-assessment are being used increasingly in higher education, to help assign grades to students' work and to help students to learn more effectively. However, in spite of this trend there is little in the published literature on how students view these methods. In this paper we present an analysis of the views of a large number of students (N = 233) who had just experienced self- and peer-feedback as part of one of their subjects. It…
