The Effectiveness of Background Blurriness in Video Advertisements
Drawing on perspectives from spatial distance perceptions and construal-level theory, we investigate how the use of blurry versus clear backgrounds affects the effectiveness of video advertisements. We demonstrate that the use of blurry (clear) backgrounds is more effective when paired with concrete (abstract) messages, thereby increasing purchase likelihood. The underlying mechanism behind this effect is that the alignment between background typ…
Perceptions of Community Empowerment Among Resettlement Community Stakeholders in China
Empowerment, a widely-used approach to community governance in Western societies, has recently attracted attention in China. This study aims to investigate whether empowerment can effectively enhance Chinese resettlement community governance. Using grounded theory, the conceptual framework of community stakeholders’ perspectives on empowerment implementation was developed. Interviews were conducted with a total of 14 participants, which included …
Association between social participation patterns and social adaptation among retired Tibetan immigrants
Introduction: This study aims to examine the impact of various patterns of social participation on social adaptation among retired Tibetan immigrant older adults, as well as the mediating role of institutional capital in this relationship. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Sichuan Province, China, involving 700 older adults who immigrated to Sichuan after retiring from Tibet. After excluding invalid samples, 501 were retained for…
TanhReLU -based convolutional neural networks for MDD classification
Major Depression Disorder (MDD), a complex mental health disorder, poses significant challenges in accurate diagnosis. In addressing the issue of gradient vanishing in the classification of MDD using current data-driven electroencephalogram (EEG) data, this study introduces a TanhReLU-based Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). By integrating the TanhReLU activation function, which combines the characteristics of the hyperbolic tangent (Tanh) and r…
Longitudinal correlation between poverty and mental health trajectories among low-income populations in China
This study aims to explore the long-term correlations between poverty and depression among low-income Chinese people. We utilise data from the China Family Panel Study 2010–2018. A group-based dual trajectory model was employed to examine the relationship between poverty and depression trajectories. The results indicate a bi-directional relationship between the distribution of poverty and depression. Moreover, there is a diversity of dynamics ass…
Patterns of physical and mental co-occurring developmental health among Chinese elderly
The study emphasizes the diversity and complexity of physical and mental co-occurring developmental health issues in the elderly population in China. These findings have significant implications for the development of targeted intervention strategies that take into account the unique health changes experienced by older adults. Additionally, they can serve as evidence for the establishment of a comprehensive long-term care system
Serial multiple mediation of perceived professional healthcare support and social structural factors in the relationship between care-seeking behavior and perinatal mental health in Chinese mothers
This study examines the serial multiple mediation effect, in which PPHS and social structural factors mediate the relationship between PMH and professional care-seeking behavior. We suggest three levels of intervention: implementing mental health in all policies, providing training for healthcare providers, and establishing healthcare channels with easily accessible information
Smartphone usage patterns and social capital among university students
This study investigates the correlation between smartphone usage patterns and social capital among Chinese college students, while also examining the moderating effect of sociability. We conducted a cross-sectional survey in Jiangsu Province, China, sampling 380 college students attending three four-year universities as respondents. After excluding invalid questionnaires, final sample size of 342 participants (108 males and 234 females, average a…
Does Trade Facilitation Promote Export Technological Sophistication? Evidence From the European Transition Countries
In this paper, we examine the impact of trade facilitation on the export technological sophistication from the European transition economies over 2004 to 2020. It is found that, in terms of trend, the export technological sophistication of labor-intensive and traditional resource-intensive industries is primarily concentrated in a lower range. In contrast, the export technological sophistication of capital and technology-intensive industries is g…
Development of Time-honored Brands in China
This paper explores the construction mechanism of time-honored brand companies’ value system. Honorary title, tradition, technology, geographic space, and culture are fundamental concepts that time-honored brands employ to establish their values. These five concepts simultaneously construct values in different dimensions and constitute the value system of the time-honored brands. Anthropologist David Graeber (2001, 2005) points out that scholars …
Flexible Intergenerational Relations in Rural Southern China
Lineage has a long history in southern China where many villages have maintained lineage ethics and activities even in present days. Previous researches suggest that the intergenerational relations in such areas appear a relax situation owing to the strong lineage tradition. However, this paper, from the perspective of the younger generation and the daily contact among generations, reveals that the younger generation challenges the authority of t…
Virulence Genotype and Phylogenetic Groups in relation to Chinese Herb Resistance among Escherichia Coli from Patients with acute Pyelonephritis
BACKGROUND: Clinical isolates of herb-resistant uropathogenic E. coli were isolated. It was possible that the virulence genotypes and phylogenetic background of E. coli differed between Chinese herb-resistant E. coli and -susceptible isolates. For this purpose, the prevalence of virulence factors (VFs) and phylogenetic background, with regard to Chinese herb resistance, among E. coli strains causing acute pyelonephritis from China were investigat…
