  • Chinese Collateralization in Comparative Perspective

    Open Access•Deborah Brautigam, Yufan Huang•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2026

How do Chinese banks secure their loans to governments and public enterprises in the Global South? How do Chinese practices compare with those of other commercial and official creditors? We find that Chinese creditors rarely secure their overseas loans with real property, but primarily utilize liquid assets in escrow accounts that operate as payment mechanisms. Chinese practices represent a hybrid ‘belt and suspenders’ approach to lending to coun…

  • Recessions, Recoveries, and Leverage

Open Access•Sui Luo, Yufan Huang et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Bulletin of Economics and…•2025

When leverage is low, recoveries from recessions are likely to eventually return the economy to its pre‐recession growth path. When leverage is high, recoveries are likely to leave the economy below its pre‐recession growth path. In other words, low‐leverage recessions are likely to be U‐shaped, whereas high‐leverage recessions are likely to be L‐shaped. The increase in leverage over the postwar period indicates that recent recessions are much mo…

  • Global, regional, and national burden of age-related macular degeneration, 1990–2019

Open Access•Yufan Huang, Tong Tang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the burden of disease and disparities in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) at the global, regional, and national levels from 1990 to 2019 using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study, with a particular focus on associations with age, period, and cohort. Methods: We derived disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and age-standardized rates of AMD from the GBD 2019. We used an age-period-…

  • Are Recoveries all the Same

Open Access•Sui Luo, Yu‐fan Huang et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Bulletin of Economics and…•2021

Recessions and subsequent recoveries are frequently classified as ‘L‐shaped’ or ‘U‐shaped’, with output losses in the former being permanent and losses in the latter at least partially made up by higher than average growth during the recovery. We estimate the probability of a U‐shaped recovery for postwar NBER recessions. Most earlier recessions were U‐shaped but more recent recessions have been L‐shaped. The shape of recoveries is tracked relati…
