Does a counter-stereotypical individual with a disability trigger backlash? Investigating the moderating effects of social dominance orientation and symbolic ableism / ¿Un individuo con discapacidad c…
We examined whether presenting a counter-stereotypical individual with a disability triggers backlash, defined as a decrease in affirmative attitudes towards people with disabilities. We also investigated whether this effect is moderated by social dominance orientation (SDO) and symbolic ableism — a contemporary form of prejudice characterized by two components: (1) individualism; and (2) lack of recognition. Participants ( N = 256) completed SDO…

Probability overestimation induced by icon arrays
In decision making under risk, where the consequences of choices vary depending on specific probabilities, a proper interpretation of the presented probabilities is essential. However, because people are not good at evaluating numerical values, such as percentages, efforts have been made to accurately convey presented probabilities using visual aids represented by icon arrays. However, previous studies have suggested that icon arrays produce an o…

Recollections of Who We Were
Understanding visitors' retrospective perceptions in museums as they connect objects with their personal identities and life stories, as well as their collective social identities, is of considerable interest to the museum field. This study employed a multiple case narrative methodology to understand the common perceptual themes of post‐World War II Japanese society between 1955 and 1970 (Shōwa 30–45) held by older Japanese adults following their…

Autobiographical memories of specific social events for older and younger adults
To clarify the characteristics of autobiographical memories of personally experienced social events, we examined visitors' long‐term memories of the 1970 Japan World Exposition Osaka (Expo 1970) for 47 older adults and of Expo 2005 Aichi Japan (Expo 2005) for 42 older and 40 younger adults using the Memory Characteristics Questionnaire (MCQ). The factor structure of the MCQ was compared with that of a previous study on long‐term memories of the g…
Entrusting dreams to someone else
People tend to entrust their own dreams, hopes, wishes, or aspirations associated with past positive or negative experiences, to others. These “others” may include children or people in younger generations. To date, psychological studies have investigated several developmental characteristics in relation to time perspectives. However, few studies have focused on the influence of autobiographical memory and future time perspectives on abandonment …
Memory Characteristics in Relation to Age and Community Identity
This study investigated autobiographical memory characteristics in relation to age and community identity using Japanese visitors’ recollections of their experiences of the 2005 Aichi World Exposition in Japan, which they had attended 4 years past. A total of 82 visitors completed a 38-item Memory Characteristics Questionnaire (MCQ). Age was grouped in 2 levels—younger adult visitors (ages 18 to 30) and older adult visitors (ages 60 to 82)—and co…
Do you remember the day of your graduation ceremony from junior high school
Autobiographical memory refers to the recollection of experiences from an individual's life. Johnson, Foley, Suengas, and Raye (1988) developed a Memory Characteristics Questionnaire (MCQ) to examine several qualitative characteristics of autobiographical memories such as sensory, affective, and contextual details. In the present study, we attempted to determine the factor structure of the MCQ. We asked 1183 participants to rate actual autobiogra…

The realities of Free/Libre/Open Source Software developers in Japan and Asia
A variety of individuals around the world are furthering development of Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) through the Internet. Why do they participate in developers’ communities and continue to develop FLOSS? Is their treatment enough to sustain their activities? Surveys, using online questionnaires, were conducted to answer these questions to analyze the FLOSS movement sociologically. However these surveys tend to focus on developers in t…

The accuracy of feeling-of-knowing judgments for general-information questions using the recall retest method
The present research examined the accuracy of the feeling-of-knowing judgments by using the recall retest method. Sixty-five undergraduate and graduate students were asked to answer 216 general-information questions, and also asked to judge the degree of their feeling of knowing on a 7-point scale for unrecalled answers. The subjects were re-tested without advance notice 36 weeks later. The results showed that the feeling-of-knowing judgment is a…
Urban‐rural differences in food habits in north‐eastern Japan
Popularity of 14 food items was investigated by questionnaires with more than thirty thousand respondents (ages ≥40 years). Half of these respondents (the urban group), lived in a prefectural city and the remaining half (the rural group), in an agricultural area in north‐eastern Japan. Four traditional items of food (rice, fish, miso soup and pickles) were frequently consumed by both groups, but they were significantly more popular in the rural g…
Nature of maintenance rehearsal in relation to delayed recognition and utterance
Existence of maintenance rehearsal, which leads to no improvement in delayed recall, and its effect on delayed recognition were examined by means of reformed paradigm of Craik and Watkins (1973, Exp. I). In Experiment I, delayed recall did not improve with amount of rehearsal, but delayed recognition did. This result showed the existence of maintenance rehearsal and its facilitative effect on recognition. In Experiment II, rehearsal with utteranc…
