Fresh Straw Clippings as Organic Soil Amendments Quickly Recovered Soil Quality of Farmland by Improving Soil Structure and Soil Hydraulic Properties
Intensive agriculture threatens soil quality globally, especially in semiarid regions. Organic matter inputs are recognized as effective strategies in improving soil quality quickly; however, it is unclear whether the fresh plant organic matter inputs more effectively improve soil quality compared with the traditional dried plant inputs. Here, a 2‐year field study was conducted to quantitatively evaluate the effects of fresh and dried maize straw…

Artificial Grassland Revegetation Improves Soil Water Retention and Storage Capacity of the Degraded Hillside Alpine Meadow
The crucial role of soil water retention and storage in soil hydrology and the water cycle is well established. However, in sensitive and degraded ecosystems like alpine meadows, the effectiveness of revegetation in enhancing these critical functions remains understudied. This study investigates the effects of revegetating severely degraded hillside meadows with artificial grasslands on soil water retention and storage capacity in the Qinghai‐Tib…
Forecasting Inflation Using Economic Narratives
We use economic narratives to forecast inflation with a large news corpus and machine learning algorithms. The economic narratives from the full text content of over 880,000 Wall Street Journal articles are decomposed into multiple time series representing interpretable news topics, which are then used to predict inflation. The results indicate that narrative-based forecasts are more accurate than the benchmarks, especially during recession perio…
An overview and trend analysis of research on the relationship between urban streets and residents' health in China pre- and post Covid-19 pandemic
Introduction: After the outbreak of COVID-19, the international community has been faced with various problems it has brought to cities. A large number of research projects and corresponding management measures were launched globally, trying to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on society. Among them, exploring how to maintain the health of residents by managing and updating the design of urban streets is one of the important issues regarding urban s…
Thinning effects on forest production and rainfall redistribution: Reduced soil water deficit and improved sustainability of semiarid plantation forestlands
Large‐scale planted afforestation worldwide has exacerbated soil desiccation and led to a serious shortage of water resources for forests sustainability in semiarid areas. Consequently, thinning is discussed as an important management approach to conserve water resources and to maintain plantation forestland sustainability. Here, we explored the effects of thinning intensity on semiarid forest production and soil water supply. Three artificial fo…
Research on Constructing a Healing Environment for the Street Spaces of a High-Density City: Using Street Spaces in Macao’s Old City Area
It is commonly recognized that street spaces in high-density cities are able to cause negative impacts in terms of residents' physical and mental health. This research intends to investigate and analyze how residents use street spaces in a high-density city in order to construct a healing environment for these street spaces. The research was conducted in Macao's old town by using spatial syntax methods to define the research areas, and implemente…
