Resource misallocation and unbalanced growth in green total factor productivity in Chinese agriculture
We measure the regional gaps in green total factor productivity (GTFP) growth by using the Dagum’s Gini coefficient based on panel data for 306 cities from 1996 to 2017, then adopt a geographical detector to test the contribution of resource misallocation to the unbalanced growth in GTFP. The results show that Chinese agricultural GTFP continues to grow, but the overall growth gap has expanded year by year, mainly due to the inter-provincial gap.…
Green productivity growth and convergence in Chinese agriculture
It has become a new trend for the future development of Chinese agriculture to accelerate the transformation from increasing production to improving quality and realizing green growth. This paper uses the sequential DEA to measure the agricultural green total factor productivity (GTFP) of 306 Chinese cities from 1996 to 2017, then tests its convergence. The results show that the average growth rate of Chinese agricultural GTFP is 0.58%; the main …
Spatial Spillover Effects of Resource Misallocation on the Green Total Factor Productivity in Chinese Agriculture
Continuous resource misallocation not only results in total factor productivity loss but also leads to ecological degradation. Therefore, in the process of changing from extensive growth to intensive growth, Chinese agriculture should pay attention to the problem of resource misallocation. There is currently a lack of relevant research, especially concerning the spatial spillover effects of resource misallocation at the city level. To fill this g…
Evaluating Agricultural Sustainability and Green GDP in China
Agricultural sustainability is the foundation and a guarantee of sustainable human reproduction. The scientific assessment of China's agricultural sustainability is a prerequisite for properly resolving the conflict between short-term economic interests and long-term ecological security. This paper uses the emergy analysis method to estimate agricultural sustainability in China and further calculates the agricultural environmental cost and green …
Factor allocation structure and green-biased technological progress in Chinese agriculture
In this paper, a nonparametric method is used to measure the total factor productivity (TFP) growth index in Chinese agriculture from 1981 to 2017, and the factor bias of technological progress is identified based on the theory of induced technological progress. Then, according to the degree of dependence of technological progress on fertiliser, biased technological progress is divided into green-biased technological progress and pollution-biased…
Agricultural trade shocks and carbon leakage
Quantity or quality? The impacts of environmental regulation on firms’ innovation–Quasi-natural experiment based on China's carbon emissions trading pilot
Environmental Tax Reform and the “Double Dividend” Hypothesis in a Small Open Economy
In this paper, we build and analyze a general equilibrium model to evaluate the effects of environment tax reform on a small open economy in a "suboptimal environment" with existing tax distortions. We then use the macroeconomic data from the Chongqing Municipality in China to conduct simulations to empirically test our analytic results. Our main findings include the followings. First, an increase in environmental tax rate can effectively reduce …
Environmental Regulation, Foreign Direct Investment and Green Technological Progress—Evidence from Chinese Manufacturing Industries
This study examines the spillover effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) on green technology progress rate (as measured by the green total factor productivity). The analysis utilizes two measures of FDI, labor-based FDI and capital-based FDI, and separately investigates four sets of industry classifications-high/low discharge regulation and high/low emission standard regulation. The results indicate that in the low discharge regulation and lo…
