A media-based indicator for studying functional cross-border regions
Administrative borders rarely match those of functional cross-border regions (CBRs). The mismatch hampers the study of CBRs. Here a novel media-based indicator is proposed for studying functional CBRs. The indicator is based on the similarity of topics, tone and geographical focus of articles in newspapers on adjacent sides of a border. The feasibility of the indicator was tested with three US–Canadian cases. The indicator aligns with tangible cr…
Global Narratives of Ecological Modernization
This study assesses the journalistic sources contributing to international climate change op-eds in tandem with narratives arising from this prominent platform for media elites and institutions. Through a theoretical lens of ecological modernization, this paper conducted a mixed methodological analysis featuring descriptive quantitative analysis and a subsequent narrative analysis. The authors first analyzed a dataset of 305 op-eds published by t…
Borderlands Dramatism
The COVID-19 pandemic took a significant toll on borderlands communities in the United States and Canada. Point Roberts, Washington, a US exclave that exists geographically apart from the Washington State mainland, was no exception. During the US–Canada border lockdown that limited the movement of residents during the pandemic, media coverage oscillated between narratives of paradise and dystopia. National media outlets focused on the community’s…
Ichiro the Public Diplomat
This study examines the confluence of sport and soft power within public diplomacy. It analyses professional baseball player Ichiro Suzuki’s role in the United States as a sporting ambassador from Japan — potentially catalysing goodwill, cultural interest, perceptions of national personality traits and even views of policy issues such as international trade and country relations. In doing so, this research draws from non-state public diplomacy, w…
Mediating nature
When the British television program Planet Earth II was released to the delight of armchair ecologists over a year ago, it provided another compelling milestone for environmental media. Here was a documentary series about the earth’s ecological conditions, pristine wilderness areas, and dynamic biodiversity playing to mainstream audiences and competing with live sporting events and streaming fantasy dramatizations for critical and mainstream atte…
Clearcut Persuasion? Audience Cognition of Mediated Environmental Advertising through the Lens of the Elaboration Likelihood Model
Through the theoretical lens of Petty and Cacioppo’s Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) and using the case of Oregon Wild and its campaign against clear-cut logging on public lands, this study explores the impact of media coverage of contentious activist advertising on audiences. A survey with experimental conditions measures attitudes of audiences exposed to this interplay of advocacy communication. The study assesses partiality toward the spons…
The Philanthropic Avatar
Unprecedented access to global philanthropic audiences via social media demands creative strategies to identify and motivate donors. One social medium not typically considered in the popular mix is virtual worlds. Using a multi-method ethnographic approach, this study contributes to the strategic communication body of knowledge by examining the purposeful usage of communication by organizations in virtual environments to build support communities…
Fukushima Fallout in Japanese Manga
Japan’s 2011 Fukushima nuclear plant calamity created a global focal point for debate about nuclear energy, and a notable forum for dissent. The incident, marked by the meltdown of three of the nuclear facility’s reactors, is the largest nuclear incident since the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster of 1986. In 2014, the popular Japanese manga Oishinbo, authored by Tetsu Kariya, helped set off a firestorm of intense debate in social and tradit…
Cultural Resiliency and the Rise of Indigenous Media
Valerie Alia’s book, The New Media Nation: Indigenous Peoples and Global Communication (New York: Berghahn Books, 2012, 270 pp.), points the way to major communication breakthroughs for traditional communities around the world, in turn fostering a more democratic media discourse. From Canada to Japan, and Australia to Mexico, this ambitious and wide-reaching work examines a broad international movement that at once protects ancient languages and …
Media Portrayals of Hashtag Activism
The confluence of activism and social media—legitimized by efforts such as the Arab Spring and Occupy Movements—represents a growing area of mainstream media focus. Using Canada’s #IdleNoMore movement as a case, this study uses framing theory to better understand how traditional media are representing activism borne of social media such as Twitter, and how such activism can ultimately have an impact in political and public policy debates. A quali…
