  • Self-Efficacy as a Long-Term Outcome of a General Education Course on Digital Technologies

Open Access•Renata Revelo, Christopher Schmitz et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•2017

This paper investigates the long-term outcomes of a general education course on digital technologies. Through conducting cross-sectional and longitudinal interviews with students, the authors found that non-engineering students who took this course had notable noncognitive, long-term outcomes. A primary focus of the work reported in this paper was the long-term outcome of self-efficacy. The authors also investigated the sources of self-efficacy f…

  • Benefits and Harms [Guest Editor's Introduction]

    Open Access•Michael C Loui•ARTICLE•IEEE Technology and Society…•2012

The articles in this special section were selected from the 2011 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS'11) that was held at Saint Xavier University in Chicago, IL, May 23 to 25, 2011

  • Flip-Flops in Students' Conceptions of State

Open Access•Geoffrey Herman, Craig Zilles et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•2012

The authors conducted a qualitative interview-based study to reveal students' misconceptions about state in sequential circuits. This paper documents 16 misconceptions of state, how students' conceptions of state shift and change, and students' methodological weaknesses. These misconceptions can be used to inform and direct instruction. This study revealed a need for the development and adoption of standard terminology and a need to focus digital…

  • Students' Misconceptions About Medium-Scale Integrated Circuits

Open Access•Geoffrey Herman, Michael C Loui et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•2011

To improve instruction in computer engineering and computer science, instructors must better understand how their students learn. Unfortunately, little is known about how students learn the fundamental concepts in computing. To investigate student conceptions and misconceptions about digital logic concepts, the authors conducted a qualitative interview-based study. In the interviews, students verbalized their thinking while they solved digital lo…

  • What Can Students Learn in an Extended Role-Play Simulation on Technology and Society

    Open Access•Michael C Loui•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Science Technology &…•2009

In a small course on technology and society, students participated in an extended role-play simulation for two weeks. Each student played a different adult character in a fictional community, which faces technological decisions in three scenarios set in the near future. The three scenarios involved stem cell research, nanotechnology, and privacy. Each student had an active role in two scenarios and served as an observer for the third. At the begi…

  • Ethical implications of technical limitations in GIS

Open Access•Christine Graeff, Michael C Loui et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Technology and Society…•2008

A geographic information system (GIS) allows g a user to combine digitized data sets from multiple sources to produce a customized map. Like traditional paper maps, GIS maps should be accurate. Unlike traditional maps, however, technical limitations raise new ethical issues for geographic information systems. These technical limitations include unavoidable inaccuracies introduced by the digitization of continuous data, the projection of three-dim…

  • Taking the byte out of cookies

Open Access•Daniel Lin, Michael C Loui•ARTICLE•ACM SIGCAS Computers and Society•1998

We consider the privacy of personal information on the World Wide Web, emphasizing a concept of privacy as an aspect of social relationships between individuals. We make three contributions to understanding the right to privacy on the Web: (1) we highlight the role of informed consent as an important consideration for privacy, (2) we identify conditions under which the collection and centralization of personal information can be ethically justifi…

  • Ethics and the privacy of electronic mail

    Erini Doss, Michael C Loui•ARTICLE•The Information Society•1995•References: 7

After reviewing legal and philosophical definitions of privacy, and their justifications, we consider whether electronic mail (e‐mail) should be private. Currently, most universities treat e‐mail as private, and most corporations do not. Federal and state laws protect the privacy of e‐mail only in public networks. We conclude by arguing why e‐mail should be private everywhere, for ethical reasons

  • A design laboratory in electrical and computer engineering for freshmen

    Open Access•Ricardo Uribe, R B Uribe et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•1994

ECE 110, Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering, is a new laboratory course for freshmen. Unlike most freshman engineering courses, ECE 110 provides substantial design and problem solving experiences with electronic devices and electrical systems. To convey fundamental concepts and principles in electrical and computer engineering, ECE 110 is directed toward the design of an autonomous electric vehicle. Each laboratory session focuse…
