  • Integrating Smart Decarceration Content Across Social Work Curricula

Diane S Young, Kathi R Trawver et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Work Education•2023

Given tremendous negative societal effects of mass incarceration, the social work profession’s investment in the Grand Challenge to Promote Smart Decarceration, and the call for criminal justice transformation, educational content that prepares social work students to engage in smart decarceration efforts is essential. This article presents strategies for integrating content on smart decarceration into courses across the social work curriculum, i…

  • Attribution of the 2020 surge in atmospheric methane by inverse analysis of Gosat observations

Open Access•Zhen Qu, Daniel Jacob et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Atmospheric methane mixing ratio rose by 15 ppbv between 2019 and 2020, the fastest growth rate on record. We conduct a global inverse analysis of 2019–2020 Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite observations of atmospheric methane to analyze the combination of sources and sinks driving this surge. The imbalance between sources and sinks of atmospheric methane increased by 31 Tg a −1 from 2019 to 2020, representing a 36 Tg a −1 forcing (direct chan…

  • Safe Areas and the Responsibility to Protect

    Daniel Jacob•ARTICLE•Global Responsibility to Protect•2018•Cited by: 1

The ‘responsibility to protect’ (RtoP) expresses the moral imperative to respond to genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity. So far, the debate on RtoP has focused almost exclusively on conflict resolution through institutional change. Various forms of diplomatic pressure, economic sanctions, and military intervention have been discussed as means to address the institutional roots of violent conflict. What has too ofte…

  • Introduction

Daniel Jacob, Stefano Recchia•ARTICLE•Global Responsibility to Protect•2018

Internationally proclaimed safe areas do not aim to end ongoing wars. Instead, their more limited goal is to create islands of temporary refuge where threatened civilians can find shelter. As intuitively compelling as the idea of safe areas may seem, however, it raises numerous practical and ethical questions. The articles in this special issue draw on history, moral philosophy and political science in order to assess whether safe areas are indee…

  • Fire emissions and regional air quality impacts from fires in oil palm, timber, and logging concessions in Indonesia

Open Access•Miriam E Marlier, Ruth Defries et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2015

Fires associated with agricultural and plantation development in Indonesia impact ecosystem services and release emissions into the atmosphere that degrade regional air quality and contribute to greenhouse gas concentrations. In this study, we estimate the relative contributions of the oil palm, timber (for wood pulp and paper), and logging industries in Sumatra and Kalimantan to land cover change, fire activity, and regional population exposure …

  • Regional air quality impacts of future fire emissions in Sumatra and Kalimantan

Open Access•Miriam E Marlier, Ruth Defries et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2015

Fire emissions associated with land cover change and land management contribute to the concentrations of atmospheric pollutants, which can affect regional air quality and climate. Mitigating these impacts requires a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between fires and different land cover change trajectories and land management strategies. We develop future fire emissions inventories from 2010–2030 for Sumatra and Kalimantan (Indones…

  • Transitivität und Diathese in romanischen Sprachen

Hans Geisler, Daniel Voelsen et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Transitivität und Diathese in…•1998

These articles all revolve around the complex imaging relations between semantic roles and diathetic categories such as active, passive and medium in Romance languages. The varying functional scope of these categories and the correspondingly multifarious relations between semantics, syntax and information structure of the sentence can only be appropriately discussed with a multi-factorial descriptive approach. Hence the perspective informing many…
