  • ‘A Swarm of Sound’

Zack Bresler, Stan Hawkins•ARTICLE•Music, Sound, and the Moving Image•2022

This article explores the idea of audiovisual immersion through the portal of the virtual reality music video. Our focus falls on a close reading of Björk’s video, ‘Family’, which addresses questions of immersion in relation to user-experience, staging, and technological innovation. This article draws on the authors’ responses to the video by considering the implications of VR immersion in a new generation of music video productions. As part of t…

  • The Right Amount of Odd”

    Open Access•Anne Danielsen, Stan Hawkins•ARTICLE•Popular Music & Society•2020•References: 2

In this music-analytic interpretation of two love songs from Prince’s Around the World in a Day album, we investigate the properties of groove, arrangement, and vocality, all of which contribute to the artist’s inimitable signature. With a disciplinary grounding in musicology, we demonstrate ways whereby musical features are associated with meaning in recorded songs. Underlying the approach is the notion that it is in the music where Prince’s ing…

During the 2010s a new generation of queer hip hop artists emerged, providing an opportunity to engage with a set of politics defined by art, fashion, lyrics and music. A leading proponent of this movement was Azealia Banks, the controversial rapper, artist and actress from New York. This study instigates a critical investigation of her performance strategies in the track and video, 'Chasing Time' (2014), offering up various perspectives that pro…

  • Queerness in Pop Music

    Stan Hawkins•BOOK•Queerness in Pop Music•2015

This book investigates the phenomenon of queering in popular music and video, interpreting the music of numerous pop artists, styles, and idioms. The focus falls on artists, such as Lady Gaga, Madonna, Boy George, Diana Ross, Rufus Wainwright, David Bowie, Azealia Banks, Zebra Katz, Freddie Mercury, the Pet Shop Boys, George Michael, and many others. Hawkins builds his concept of queerness upon existing theories of opacity and temporality, which …

  • On Male Queering in Mainstream Pop

    Stan Hawkins•CHAPTER•Queering the Popular Pitch•2013

On first glance, it might seem that queer identities in mainstream pop culture have broken through the idea of sexual deviations and gender roles. The unmistakable images of lesbian and gay representation and queer signs are ubiquitous in many performative spaces, where such displays of otherness often represent a norm that is perceived more as performance than as a connection to sexual preferences. Just over fifteen years ago, to describe a pers…

  • Remodeling Britney Spears

Stan Hawkins, Jill Eileen Richardson et al.•ARTICLE•Popular Music & Society•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 7

This article examines a range of perspectives and cluster of discourses that are informed by the reading of one single video, Toxic, performed by pop icon Britney Spears. In our investigation, we seek new directions for audiovisual analysis and attempt to explore the music text alongside symbolic meanings mediated by a video. Of particular interest are the intersection of characters played by the star with constructions of personal narrative, iss…

  • Perspectives in popular musicology

    Open Access•Stan Hawkin, Stan Hawkins•ARTICLE•Popular Music•1996•Cited by: 5•References: 9

Scholars of popular music in the 1990s are increasingly aware that traditional musicology has failed to recognise commercial pop music as a legitimate academic area of study. Intransigence on the part of many Western music institutions towards recognising the field of popular music study is attributable to issues that have been heatedly debated and discussed in most disciplines of popular music study. Even withstanding the expansion of critical a…

  • Prince

Musically, it (Lovesexy) is probably the most complex and unconventional body of work he (Prince) has ever produced. The dense undergrowth of twists and disjunctures to which even the most structured songs are subjected brings to mind once again the extended jam rehearsal technique Prince has always favoured. (Hill 1989, p. 210
