  • “Describing the tragedy of existence” Structure and Meaning in Krzysztof Penderecki’s

    Helmut Loos•ARTICLE•Archiv für Musikwissenschaft•2024

Krzysztof Penderecki composed his Second Symphony in the winter of 1979/1980 amidst the Polish people’s dramatic struggle for freedom. Compositionally, the entire symphony is developed from a seven-note theme which, alongside a minor third, primarily consists of a chromatically ascending, three-note motif. Drawing on the tradition of musical rhetoric, this can be interpreted as the eternal struggle between new beginnings and optimism as opposed t…

  • Zur Entstehung der ukrainischen Nationalmusik bis Mykola Lysenko

    Helmut Loos•ARTICLE•Archiv für Musikwissenschaft•2023

Brutal repression long prevented the Ukrainian national movement, which began in the eighteenth century, from becoming more widely known. The Hetmanate of the Zaporozhian Cossacks became the model for the idea of the Ukrainian nation-state. Beginning with Wernyhora, the Cossack-portrayed as a blind singer, following the example of Homer and Ossian-initiated the identity of Ukrainian national consciousness with his mythical songs. Taras Shevchenko…

  • Die Tonarten der klassischen Vokalpolyphonie im Konflikt der deutschen Musikwissenschaft

    Helmut Loos•ARTICLE•Archiv für Musikwissenschaft•2020

Since its revival in German musicology in the 1950s, Renaissance research has been accompanied by a fundamental methodological dispute between Carl Dahlhaus and Bernhard Meier. In his habilitation thesis of 1968, Dahlhaus attacked Meier’s rigorously historical, early studies that were based on the definitive importance of church modes for sixteenth-century composition. Dahlhaus, on the other hand, propagated an authentic-plagal general mode in th…

  • Die kunstreligiöse Botschaft der Leipziger Musikwissenschaft im späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert

    Open Access•Helmut Loos•ARTICLE•Musicological Annual•2015

Musicology that developed in Leipzig played a key role in contributing to the reputation of this city of music throughout Europe. In a tragic way, its development was fatally attached to the traditional idea of music being an established part of artistically religious general education. The importance of music as “serious and holy music” was thus assured, which became an essential factor in its sacralisation

  • Beethoven und der Fortschrittsgedanke

    Open Access•Helmut Loos•ARTICLE•Musicological Annual•2015

The bourgeois/middle-class Modernity chose music for its art-as-religion and made Beethoven the key figure of its ideals. As a consequence, the “romantic image of Beethoven” (Arnold Schmitz) idealizes the composer as being freed of all earthly restrains. The notion of progress was one of the main ideas of this social movement and it was projected on Beethoven and totalized with his music. This process is demonstrated and explained with selected e…

    Open Access•Helmut Loos•ARTICLE•Musicological Annual•2011
