  • Spatial and temporal nonstationarity in the association between noise levels and perceived noise annoyance during work across groups with different chronotypes and levels of social jetlag

    Open Access•Jiangyu Song, Mei-Po Kwan et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2026

While numerous studies have examined the negative effects of noise on people's noise-related annoyance, limited attention has been paid to the spatio-temporal nonstationarity of noise levels and annoyance during work. To address this research gap, we employed Global Positioning System (GPS) devices, mobile noise sensors, and activity diaries to collect continuous noise exposure data from 482 participants in Hong Kong over one working day and one …

  • Association of sitting time with cardiovascular events among manual and non-manual workers

Open Access•Lei Lan, Xinyue Lang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Longer daily sitting time was associated with an increased risk of major CVD in both manual and non-manual occupational groups, and the risk was especially high among non-manual workers. Our findings highlight the importance of including measures to reduce sedentary behaviour within a comprehensive strategy to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease in China

  • Achievement of recommended targets for cardiovascular disease prevention in adults with diabetes in 38 low- and middle-income countries

Open Access•Yang Li, Minghai Yan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2024

Background: Implementation of guideline recommendations for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention in people with diabetes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is unclear. We assessed the achievement of CVD prevention targets among patients with diabetes in LMICs. Methods: We pooled nationally representative cross-sectional surveys from 38 LMICs. We evaluated three targets according to the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommendations…

  • How People’s Covid-19 Induced-Worries and Multiple Environmental Exposures Are Associated with Their Depression, Anxiety, and Stress during the Pandemic

    Open Access•Jianwei Huang, Mei-Po Kwan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

This study investigates how people's perceived COVID-19 risk, worries about financial hardship, job loss, and family conflicts, and exposures to greenspace, PM 2.5 , and noise (in people's residential neighborhoods and daily activity locations) are related to their depression, anxiety, and stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a two-day activity-travel diary, a questionnaire, and real-time air pollutant and noise sensors, a survey was conduc…

  • Associations of dietary copper intake with cardiovascular disease and mortality

Open Access•Xiaocong Li, Mahshid Dehghan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Our findings demonstrated that excessive dietary copper intake was associated with higher risks of death and cardiovascular diseases in Chinese adults. Further studies in populations with different dietary characteristics are needed to obtain dose-response relationships and to refine global dietary recommendations

  • Association between matched chronotype and poor mental health among shift workers

Open Access•Beixi Li, Gengze Liao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2023

  • Perceived built environment characteristics associated with walking and cycling across 355 communities in 21 countries

    Open Access•Kwadwo A Boakye, Kwadwo Boakye et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 36

  • Differences and agreement between two portable hand-held spirometers across diverse community-based populations in the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (Pure) study

Open Access•MyLinh Duong, Sumathy Rangarajan et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

Introduction Portable spirometers are commonly used in longitudinal epidemiological studies to measure and track the forced expiratory volume in first second (FEV 1 ) and forced vital capacity (FVC). During the course of the study, it may be necessary to replace spirometers with a different model. This raise questions regarding the comparability of measurements from different devices. We examined the correlation, mean differences and agreement be…

  • Changes in physical activity and rest-activity circadian rhythm among Hong Kong community aged population before and during Covid-19

Open Access•Priscilla Ming Yi Lee, Bixia Huang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

This study found that the effect of COVID-19 on physical activity and rest-activity circadian rhythm for the community people may be short-term, indicating strong resilience of the community population. Although maintaining physical activity are encouraged for the older adults to sustain good health, a rebound in their physical activity may be a sign for the next wave of outbreak if insufficient social distancing and population protection are fac…

  • The household economic burden of non-communicable diseases in 18 countries

Open Access•Adrianna Murphy, Benjamin Palafox et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2020

Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of death globally. In 2014, the United Nations committed to reducing premature mortality from NCDs, including by reducing the burden of healthcare costs. Since 2014, the Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiology (PURE) Study has been collecting health expenditure data from households with NCDs in 18 countries. Methods: Using data from the PURE Study, we estimated risk of catastroph…

  • Re-look at socioeconomic inequalities in stroke prevalence among urban Chinese

Open Access•Shenghua Li, Fei Xu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

This study revealed that socioeconomic inequalities in stroke were diminishing in regional China during the recent 11-year period, although the SES-stroke association was still positive. Tailored intervention against stroke should currently target on SES-vulnerable people

  • Urban blue space and health and wellbeing in Hong Kong

    Open Access•Joanne K Garrett, Mathew P White et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2018•Cited by: 19•References: 12

  • Fine Particulate Air Pollution and Daily Mortality. A Nationwide Analysis in 272 Chinese Cities

Open Access•Renjie Chen, Peng Yin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Respiratory…•2017

  • Combined atmospheric oxidant capacity and increased levels of exhaled nitric oxide

Open Access•Changyuan Yang, Huichu Li et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

Nitrogen dioxide and ozone are two interrelated oxidative pollutants in the atmosphere. Few studies have evaluated the health effects of combined oxidant capacity (O _x ). We investigated the short-term effects of O _x on fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), a well-established biomarker for airway inflammation, in a group of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. Real-time concentrations of O _x were obtained by calculating directly t…

  • A school-based comprehensive lifestyle intervention among chinese kids against obesity (CLICK-Obesity)

Open Access•Fei Xu, Robert S Ware et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

  • Physical activity inversely associated with the presence of depression among urban adolescents in regional China

Open Access•Xin Hong, JieQuan Li et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2009

This study, conducted among Chinese adolescents, strengthened the evidence that physical activity was inversely associated with depression. Our study has important implications for health officers and public health professionals to pay much attention to the relationship between physical activity and depression in Mainland China

  • Impact of socio-economic factors on stroke prevalence among urban and rural residents in Mainland China

Open Access•Fei Xu, Lap Ah Tse et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

Our study consistently revealed that the prevalence of stroke was associated with increasing levels of all SES indices, including FAI, education, and occupation. However, a significant gradient was only observed with FAI after controlling for important confounding factors. The findings suggested that, compared with occupation and education, FAI could be used as a more sensitive index of socio-economic status for public health studies in China
